Hi there I have 1997 4.0 XJ8 which I have owned for about 5 months and done approx 5000 miles. It had had uprated tensioners fitted and new torque converter and runs really well as long as I keep putting petrol in it! How critical is it to fit Pirelli tyres as I have heard you can get vibration on budgets? Cheers

Regarding tyres, many owners of XJ8s and XK8s feel Pirrelli tyres are rubbish,
there are better tyres out there like Dunlop and Toyo (my preferance)

Any brand of tyre will cause vibrations if it's not properly balanced.

Pirelli tyres are fine for what they do which is run quietly and last a long time to keep fleet managers happy.

XJ's are sensitive to wheel and tyre imbalances or imperfections in wheel and tyre matching and one solution is to have a Roadforce balance done. This is far more sophisticated than a dynamic balance most tyre monkeys do and matches any weight or balance variations between the wheel and the tyre and positions the tyre on the optimum point on the wheel to give the lowest rolling variation. Jaguar issued a TSB on this and recommend the procedure.

I can't make my own mind up about which tyres to fit to my XJ so really can't help anybody else choose. The only point worth making is I've found budget tyres or mid range tyres rarely last long on a Jaguar and it might just be worth biting the bullet and putting a premium choice like Michelin Primacy, Goodyear Efficent Grips, Verdesteen Ultrac Cento or maybe Toyo C1Fs on.

Use Rezulto to find the best deals on whatever tyre you choose and get them Roadforce balanced. Might be the best way forwards

Thanks for that it's long wheelbase and heard propshaft can also get out of balance. The car has 104,000 miles on it so expect a few things will need changing but it is a really nice car so I'm keen to look after it
