XJS Cabriolet - were there any manual gearboxes

I also think they did some facelift 6.0 litre V12 auto convertibles in which case it might be a better bet to convert one of those to manual which isn't a difficult job to do.
Towards the end of the life of the XJS, when the 4.0 had become "Celebration" models there were some V12s too, I was offered one new when I looked at buying a XJS convertible. They don't seem to come onto the market very often and given the prices being asked for good Celebration convertibles, I'd hate to think what these run out V12 convertibles would be going for.a8hex said:

Whenever I see one for sale its an auto.
Are you referring to the convertible or the cabriolet? Two different models. Cabriolets, if any came thru with the I6, may have been offered with a manual from the factory. Also, some late I6 convertibles did have manuals, but not very many.XJ Flyer said:
I wouldn't mind betting that the increase in value of putting a manual box into a 6.0 Litre Convertible would probably more than pay for the conversion costs.IE the win win situation of making a rare car even rarer and better.
You would have to factor in the loss in value for taking away originality though, particularly if not using an original spec manual box.DB9VolanteDriver said:

Convertible: 89 on. Power folding soft hood
So, a cabriolet is definitely not a convertible in Jaguar XJS circles.
As discussed above, the cabriolet and the convertible are different.
The two significant differences are:-
1. The convertible is a 2+2 where the cabriolet has no rear seats.
2. As the cabriolet has a solid roll bar, it is a much stiffer car.
To answer the original question, the answer is yes. I am in the process of buying a manual cabriolet, with the 3.6 straight six engine. I reckon it must be very rare, since the vast majority are both auto and V12.

Convertibles were not 2+2 until 1994 or thereabouts. Up until that time they have a locker box in place of the rear seats. The two significant differences are:-

Hi,
I have a 1985 3.6 manual XJS Cabriolet, which I've enjoyed for over 20 years, I built it from a damaged donor car and a brand new bodyshell - they are wonderful cars, but many have suffered from tin worm or accident damage by now. I think that 1100 3.6's were made between 1983 and 1987, but only 400 of those were 5 speed Getrag manual. Factor in the ones that have died and you will see that they are quite rare. There is a bit on my web site about mine - and yes, I MIGHT be persuaded to sell.

Manual 3.6 Cabs greatly outnumber autos- because four-speed automatic (ZF 4HP22) offered from 1987 onwards I have a 1985 3.6 manual XJS Cabriolet, which I've enjoyed for over 20 years, I built it from a damaged donor car and a brand new bodyshell - they are wonderful cars, but many have suffered from tin worm or accident damage by now. Thanks tali1, I had my numbers frack to bunt, yes, more manual than Auto. The dvla stuff doesn't really differentiate between Cabriolets and Coupes and many folk still call cabs convertibles and vv. It would appear that just over 400 are taxed in UK and have survived - there must be some others. John Bleasdale did an excellent job with the Cabriolet Register and it keeps being added to. If the original build ratio has remained approximately the same then there might be around 100 autos and 300 manuals around.

Hi,
thanks again tali1 I had the distinct impression that there were NO manual Convertibles made, other than conversions after build - so perhaps there is still confusion over Cab/Conv naming. It took me many fruitless attempts to get the DVLA to change my car to Cabriolet on the V5 - I gave up in the end and it's still down as a Convertible. Even phone calls produced nothing - they tell me not to worry - I HATE them.

DVLA not listing Cabriolet on HMleft .Perhaps you could try change to XJ-SC -which was official title ?
I know of a case where someone got car name changed simply because of correct mods of sportier version
Looking at HMLeft it seems your "Convertible" is one of only 4 incorrectly listed (ie before 1988)
Auto Con/Cabriolet seem to be correctly date listed though.
