Looking at XF-R's in the new year.....

The noise on the last one I drove was good, but you had to be at the higher end of the revs to make it really audible - is there any exhaust system others have had fitted to make it a bit more, y'know - fun?!

Never heard one IRL.

When Mrs V88 decided to replace her S-Type V8 with an XF 5.0 earlier this year, we thought it would be a good idea to have a Spires XFR system fitted at point of sale.

It's superb. Despite it only being the replacement back boxes and associated pipework, the difference is night and day. Deep, rich and bassy, and together with the AJV8 Gen III's firing order, gives a fantastic old school muscle car sound. Perfect, if like us, you wake up to neighbours rattling off to work (a few miles away rolleyes) in their various Euro DERVs.

Not quite rattling window panes, but very close

If however, you want full-on NASCAR / Motorsport, then Paramount do a full system that, by all accounts, is damn loud!

No, not at all.

Cruising at 70 for instance, just distant rumbling. Squeeze the pedal into the carpet, and distant rumbling becomes very close thunder.

It's very addictive smile

TL Jag exhausts sound good, but only heard on XK - will the XF sound more muted?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKVb6unU84I

The Spire system sounds good too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E396uHl_UcA .....I'm trying to compete with a neighbour who has a C63 with exhaust UK system (similar here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l30vuz2IufM )....

Virtual pint for JCB if you get your XFR to sound like this;

Anyone know if the XFR-S has a less restrictive system and therefore produces a better noise?

Difficult to say.

However, both cars deliver exactly the same power, from the same (5.0) engine, so it's likely that the standard exhausts are both as restrictive as each other.

Let's face it, almost all stock exhaust can be improved sound / volume wise!

ETA
Didn't read your post properly mentioning the XFR-S. That has a louder standard exhaust iirc.

Put a Spires on mine a few months ago. Awesome noise.

A bit louder on start up, especially from cold (deaf neighbours help) but a lovely burble when low speed driving.

At normal driving speeds up to the legal limits it's unobtrusive, with no droning or vibrations, though as soon as you start to use any revs it's very pleasantly noticeable.

One nice effect is under load between 2 - 4,000 RPM when it's like a really deep throaty growl, though my preferred moments are on down changes using the paddles with all the pops and bangs.

Never really bothered with the paddles till I put the Spires on it, tend to use them all the time now. smile

Tunnels and underground car parks are now some of my favourite places to visit.

+ 1 for Spires. Transforms the sound of the engine.

I fitted Quicksilver back boxes to my XFR, it was only a week old when I made the change, the originals are soooo so quiet!

I believe the Quicksilver and Spires were jointly developed and so sound the same, the Quicksilver has the slash cut tails the same as the originals.

The sound is awesome without being boy racer, think Mercedes AMG and your pretty much there, the you tube clips don't really represent the sound accurately.

When keeping a constant speed I.e. Motorway, there is a faint rumble that is hardly noticeable from the standard boxes, drop a few cogs and the V8 sound is awesome.

Sorry for the slight thread hijack! I've got a 2008 4.2 XKR, considering the Spires "stage 1" exhaust, which basically replaces just the center section with the middle silencers for a pair of straight through pipes with a cross-over. Anyone done just this part on a similar car and can comment on how much louder it is and how the tone of the exhaust is changed?

That is essentially what the factory does with the XKR-S and XFR-S. Lovely extra noise with more pops and bangs but in no way too loud in either light throttle openings or under full load. Very much a "Stage 1" upgrade as described.

Ashley, there must be something else on the XKR-S as the exhaust note is far deeper and noisier than the XFR-S, any idea?

Thanks Ashley, that's good to know. I've never heard an XKR-S yet, there's one in stock at my local Jaguar dealer, I may see if I can blag a test run...

I can only assume either smaller back boxes or less restrictive cats. The XKR-S GT has only less restrictive 100 cell cats as different to the normal XKR-S and sounds like thunder.....

XKR-S has an active exhaust so can open a flap for better flow and noise whilst meeting legal drive by noise, this works earlier in rev range in dynamic mode but sometimes it's not appropriate to has the sharper throttle etc so you can just teak fuse 19 for loud mode..... Essentially this is what the active exhaust button on F type has.

The XF doesn't have this feature so you have a conventional exhaust muffler sized for noise and marketing requirement ŵith no way to make it louder. Only way to get a decent sound in the stock XFR-S is to drive with the row2 seats folded down!
