X-Type diesel buying guide
Discussion
Hi all,
Sorry if this has been done before. I've tried searching but can't find a comprehensive list on what to look out for when buying a Jag.
I'm set on buying a diesel x type for around £3000 - £3500. I'm looking for mileage around 80k and would prefer the sports model. My commute to work is fairly long at 400 miles per week, so need good fuel economy. I don't think a 2.2l is quite within budget, so would rather have a clean 2l with good service history.
Are there any crucial elements to look out for when looking around such a car? I know the clutch is an expensive job to repair, so any tale tale signs that would give away whether this is slipping would be great.
If you have any tips please could you share them? Thanks.

In most cases, the diesels are reliable, there's a fair bit of Ford going on which is a good thing as the Mondeo is a cracking car. Build quality on early X types isn't the best and there have been people on this forum and elsewhere complaining of serious rust around the sills. I would check all electrics, handbrake, as in common with the Mondeo, these can seize meaning a strip down of the calipers, suspension bushes can wear, so check for knocking etc. go for a later model with a good service history for piece of mind. If it was my money, I would take the Mondeo over the X type for build quality and the practicality. But the Jag is still a nice motor.
I've just put mine up for sale, as I no longer need it. It had a new clutch in December last year.

My 02 X-type has great build quality. Only one rattle which is in the parcel shelf area and being pulled apart this weekend!
Handbrake adjuster stuck on one side. One hour to strip clean and reassemble each side. Not a hard job.
Sills depend on whether they've been cleaned up under the plastic covers. Mine were fine but some are, as mentioned above, like lace when you have a look. I treated minor surface rust and made sure the drain holes were all clear.
Electric seats are useful and look for one with folding rears. I'm converting mine (easy job!). Cruised from Bristol to Birmingham and back at the weekend in sheer relaxed comfort, averaged 33mpg too (3.0 V6).
I chose one over a Mondeo as I preferred it as a place to be. Had it 3.5 years and very pleased.
