Hi all, this is my first post so please be gentle.
I have used the search function but it has only confused things.

I am now in the market to buy my first jag, I have got it down to two models but I'm struggling to decide between them.

I was looking at an XJR from around 2007, due to it having the face lift. But whilst looking at them I realised that for the same money I can now afford an XK of the same age.
Now I have driven an XK and loved it, but I can't help being attracted to the big supercharged luxo-barge.

Does anybody know how the two compare?
Is the XJR a decent drive or is it best left to blasting up and down straight roads?
Is the power difference noticeable or is it more "you don't miss won't you haven't had"

If it helps, my budget is £15000, I have no children and I'm single. I am also in my early 20s.
I don't need to buy a house etc, this money has been set aside for a car.
Insurance on both cars is reasonable.

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the endless questions

Semiskimmed. As a young 'un I would opt for the XKR rather than the XJR. The barge is a bit more for the portly older gent who likes to know that he has a powerful car but will rarely drive it in anger. Or someone who is towing a reasonable sized boat on occasions. Don't get me wrong, the XJR is an amazing car and, to be honest, you wouldn't be disappointed but the XK just seems a bit more appropriate for someone in their twenties.

I had a 6 pot XJR (manual) when I was in my forties and it was a truly superb, bombproof bit of kit but none of your two options come with a manual gearbox so even the XK isn't a real 'drivers car' (I am sure there are mods that can be done though!). I have heard that the newer 5.0 litre XK is truly awesome and is everything for the keen driver and more but your budget may put you out of reach of one of those. Both are luxury cars and even as a GT the XKR can appear to have quite a wafty ride. It is not comparable to a TVR, Porsche or other true 'sports cars' but will bring smiles to your face for sure!

Are you a keen driver or do you just want a luxury toy to cruise in? Is there a need for four proper seats? If you have no need to have four adult seats then get yerself an XKR with a drop top.

All IMHO and on the back of the fact that I have had three XJ's.

Thanks for your reply.
Sadly the XKR is still out of my reach, £15000 is the most I want to spend and I can't find any XKRs in budget.

I don't need back seats at all.
I do enjoy a good keen blast every week or so, but for the most part I'd rather have something to waft about in. That being said, I don't want to buy something that isn't capable of holding its own when the roads get twisty, that's the thing holding my off the XJR.
Having had a go in and read the views of the XK I think it's closer to he sort of car I want. I just don't want it to be a slouch...

For example, my father had a steel bodied XKR 4 litre, and that was incredibly fast, and looking at the stats the Ali bodied XK is only a little slower then it, or is this just jaguar fudging their figures?

It is the 4.2 litre and for a young lad as a first sports car it's quite something! Still a great model to consider but make sure it is post 2001 (to be safe) as Nikisil was an issue prior to that.

For £15k there are so many options for you but I suspect that you may have your heart set on a Jag. Is it because you grew up with them? It was exactly that for me but one ride in a TVR Chimaera and I was completely in love. The noise, the drama! After 7 years of ownership the Chim was sold on last November and I am now enjoying a Cayman S (2007 Design Edition 1) and I love it. Mid engined (so perfectly balanced and easy to push hard without battling with it). Consider other options and you may well see that there are more advanced motors out there for the same money.

I will always have a place for Jags in my heart and if I ever make enough 'play money' I shall bag me a F Type R.

Good luck fella.

Your right, I grew up with them and loved them for as far back as I can remember.

I'll be honest, Iv never really looked at Porsches as a car I'd like to own, but with that, the Caymen you have linked is a lovely looking motor. Not as nice inside mind. But I suspect the pleasure is more in the driving of these.
Thanks for your advice, I'll use it wisely and broaden my horizon.

EDIT
So I have spent a few hours researching Porsches and my conclusion is..... I'll stick to the Jaaag hunt.

A good plan young sir. You wont be disappointed but keep the Porker in mind when you fancy a change at some point in the future and when driving skills are honed by understanding what a powerful, well balanced car can really do.

Enjoy the hunt for the perfect 'you' jaaaaaagwaaaar.

Both the XJR (350 generation) and the XKR (gen 2) are alu bodies and both suffer from paint blistering problems. On the XJ check around the base of doors rear window and front window pillars. XK before rear wheel arches, base of boot. I've seen both 2006-8 model year cars with this problem and that's were your 15k budget will take you for the XJR, agree 15k will get you a late 2005 XKR (gen 1) steel body. The XJ went up to 59 plate, see if you can see some late ones and see how the bodywork looks, the problem seems to have been resolved in later model XK's, I hope for Jaguar's sake that it doesn't occur with the new XE and XF when they come, as mass volume cars they can't have paint defects, it could kill Jaguar.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

Just to let you know, I might not be going a head with purchasing a jaguar. A slight change in circumstance means I may have to buy a diesel.
A new job with a lot of driving, 20,000+ miles a year..

This means I'll be looking at something German.. Perhaps an Audi A5 3 litre tdi..

I'll obviously keep this updated
