I think I remember a friend's dad having an XJS or XJR-S special edition with 3 windscreen wipers. This would have been in about 1985. Can anyone enlighten me and tell me if such a thing existed, and if so, what it was?

I was a car-mad kid and I seem to recall noticing it at the time (and saying, "that's a xxx") but my memory could be playing tricks on me. He had done very well for himself and had a taste for expensive toys, so it could have been quite an exotic one. I've googled but can't find it anywhere.

Cheers.

Some E-types had three wipers but I've never noticed an XJS with three.

Yes - it was definitely an XJS of some description and it may now be my memory playing tricks on me! It would have been between 1984 and 1990.

Toyota FJ Cruiser: This retro-styled SUV, produced for the North American market from 2007 to 2014, featured three wipers across its short, wide, and nearly vertical windshield.
Jaguar E-Type: Many Series 1 and Series 2 short-wheelbase versions of the classic E-Type (or XKE) featured a three-wiper system, while the 2+2 and later Series 3 models used two wipers.
MG Midget/Austin Healey Sprite: US-spec models from around 1969 onwards were fitted with three wipers to comply with American safety regulations regarding the percentage of the windshield that needed to be cleared.
Bugatti EB110: This high-performance supercar from the 1990s also utilized a three-wiper design.
Other European Models: Certain other models, primarily older European vehicles, also featured three wipers, including the Citroën AX, Fiat Panda (Mk1), SEAT Ibiza, and Volkswagen Scirocco.

That is some great anoraking - thank you!

I'll keep Googling when I am bored and see if I can fund any reference to it, although it is looking increasingly like it's just stuff I'm making up in my head.

Perhaps you saw an E-Type but your brain later changed it into an XJS?

My brain is capable of all sorts of nonsense (!) but it was definitely an XJS. He wasn't into classic cars.

nono

Single wiper for all the above. Super-search auto-complete (which is really what the bks that passes for AI should be called) fails again.

Three wipers was something that was added to some cars bound to the US because legislation was introduced that mandated a certain percentage of the windscreen to be covered. The S3 E-Types and MGB's had them, the XJS dd not need them because it was introduced in 1975 and after the legislation.

Maybe it was a Lynx with a wiper on the back glass?
