Really need to get myself a daily driver as using my diesel van all the time keeps clogging up the DPF. Really fancy a X308 Jag XJ to waft around in.

I live inside the ULEZ zone so the only X308s I can look at are 2001-2002. Doesn’t leave much in the way of choices.

Went to have a look at this one today which was pretty local. 66k from new, MOT until June next year and most importantly, ULEZ compliant.

So, Jag issues. Remote fob doesn’t work. When you open any of the doors the warning bong bongs, as though you’ve left the key in the ignition, boot won’t open, fuel flap won’t open, radio won’t turn on, A/C is warm, “Restricted Performance” pops up as soon as you turn the ignition on and then when driving if you floor it the car kangaroos like there’s no tomorrow.

However, it was so nice and wafty! They’re asking £2500 for it which I’d be happy with if it didn’t have all those problems. They’re a small back street car dealer that mostly sells 5-6 year old runarounds. They took this as p/x and don’t have the first idea where to start on fixing anything on it, and I’m sure they’re not interested in fixing it either.

I ran through the list of faults with the guy and told him that it’s a lovely car but needs too much doing. He told me to make him an offer to which I replied “you won’t like my offer”. I offered him £500 based on neither of us knowing what the car might need. He’s going to speak to the boss and come back to me tomorrow. I reckon this one is still going to be festering on their forecourt in a couple of months time. Shame really as it’s a lovely clean car.

I used to own one - bought it new as a company car.... 'carnival red' which was a lovely colour.

Bentley were hot on my heels at the time to buy an Arnage and I spent a day driving the Bentley as an extended road test. I got back in the Jag afterwards to drive home - the Jag felt immediately so much nicer!

I have no idea how running an old one would be, but mine, which I had for just over a year, was absolutely lovely.

Lovely car. But with those issues it's unsaleable, so they'll either have to fix them, which isn't an option, or they basically give it away. You might win... Aircon is straighforward, the rest might be fixed with a bit of genius or be an expensive nightmare.

Do you know any Jaguar experts or autoelectric/diagnostic wizards?

I used to drive my dad's about. I really loved it. I can't help with those problems but wish you well with the process. Please keep us posted.

The rough running and restricted performance is most likely the coils. The codes will tell you which cylinder(s). Although at the age it's likely as well to change all 8. Pretty common problem and I swapped a few when I had my XJR.
