Hi, I'm thinking of upgrading the family car and I'm considering a Jaguar.

Am I right that the only model with an estate version is the X-type?

I understand the X-type has recently discontinued production. Does that mean there will be some unsold new ones floating around the system somewhere at a decent price?

Any advice on the the best way to source one? On-line sites like orangewheels seem to offer good discounts. Has anyone used this site or similar.

I'd be grateful for any advice including "must have" options etc. Thanks.

Yes, at present the only estate Jaguar is the X-Type. The XF is rumoured to go wagon in a couple of years. The X-Type ceases production end of this year. Are you after a new one? The X-Type had it's final and best facelift earlier in the year, which has improved the exterior looks and interior comfort no end. At the end of it's design life it has finally all come together as a great car, now with a decent diesel engine (2.2d) hooked up to a silky smooth auto.

If you want a 'Classic' Jaguar feel, go for the Sovereign, if you want sporty got 'Sport Premium'. The cars are themed differently on the inside and outside. The estate X-Type has been a big seller for Jaguar, hence their hesitation in leaving a hole in their model line up with no 'family estate', so the XF estate should be awesome, but sometime off.

As for deals, you can ALWAYS get a great deal on one of these.......my choice would be a loaded 2.2D Auto Sport Premium.

While there are deals to be done new, of that there is no doubt, these cars lose value very quickly. A quick search of the BCA site came up with, for example, a November 2007 2.5 litre petrol auto, 10,000 miles, at an estimated price of around £13,000 cmpared to £31,000 new 24 months back. OK, it's petrol not diesel, but £18,000 difference buys a heck of a lot of diesel! If diesel is a must, a September 07 manual estate with 20,000 warranted miles was around £13,000.

An Autotrader search comes up with a load of cars in dealers around 5,000 miles, and a 2008 auto 2.2 diesel auto seems to be at an asking price of £17,000. These of course will still have a Jaguar warranty attached too.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the replies.

At the end of it's design life it has finally all come together as a great car, now with a decent diesel engine (2.2d) hooked up to a silky smooth auto.

Yes, getting a model when most imperfections have been ironed out appeals to me. I think the 2.2d is the engine I want too (40mpg would be a pleasant change from my current 17!). Not sure whether the auto is worth the extra, I'm moving from a Grand Voyager and the auto is very clunky and has just croaked (expensive).

A black 2.2d Auto Sport Premium would do me nicely!

I'd started browsing for 2nd hand X-types around £16k and they look great value but hadn't seen the exact match of goodies I wanted (black, cd autochanger, upgraded sound). Then clicked on a link for new cars and they were showing around £5k discounts off list so was just thinking aloud if that may be a better option given the model's impending demise. Around 19k for a new 2.0d S up to 27k for the Sport Premium above with a few bells and whistles (too rich for me).

I've never bought a new car (had company ones) and I'm useless at haggling hence the question really. It's difficult to know how much to allow off advertised prices. I'd pay a bit more for a new one if it currently represents a better deal over a used one.

NormanD, yes I would also love to have an X-type plus an XKR. I'd convinced myself to get an XKR (2007) about this time last year when they dropped to around 35k. But whilst dithering, after all the government stimuli the prices shot up again and a year on they are now over 40k for a year older car, bizarre. So I gave up and got another TVR instead which left a few quid over for the X-type. Still hope to get one one day.

Well, I've narrowed it down to black auto estates for you. The box is nothing like the old Chrysler - very smooth and you'd like it. Try this selection:-

There are a few to your specification there.

Thanks folks, you're all very helpful on here! clap

Lowdrag,
there are indeed several excellent contenders in that search list, thanks. I had my search set to "within 60 miles" so missed most of them as I'm Oop North and most of those dealers are in the Midlands or Darn Sarf. Our local Jaguar Dealer closed down earlier this year. Quite willing to travel if necessary though for that sort of money.

NormanD, Snuffle,
can't seem to find any info on the spoiler kit and none of the adverts seem to mention it. Got any links to pictures?

Triple7,
I'll take you up on your kind offer thanks (when I can find how to PM you!). At least I'll know then which is the best option for me.

I think we could be in business. They do look a lot of car for the cash.
