Hi folks, a bit of advice for a cross forum visitor would be very handy...my dad's X308 4l has gone pop and he's decided to replace it. Question is, what with? He still prefers the shape of it compared to the X350, but I reckon his budget of say £10-12k would be better spent on the later shape and I'm sure he'll take my advice, in fact I'll probably choose the car for him.
I know that the X350 is all aluminium, (?) better built, etc, but what do I need to look out for and what opinions are out there on the various engine sizes. The 3l V6 would probably be just about fast enough, the XJR too much.
I realise the price will restrict him to early builds, are there well known problems with these?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I agree about the looks, the 308 is a much prettier car IMO.

£12k shound buy a very good low mileage 03/04 V6 engined XJ.

They are pretty reliable mechanicaly but check very carefully for corrosion around the boot lid, door bottoms and all over the sides. There has been a factory recall regarding serious brake pipe corrosion. Paintwork quality on early cars I've looked at has been terrible. Air suspension can throw up random fault codes requiring a new compressor to fix. Some cars suffer from electricial problems.

The V6 is more than quick enough and feels like a completely different car to drive - much lighter and more agile then the 308. It's also very quiet and refined on a motorway cruise. I don't like the ride quality much - it's just too hard for my taste even on the smallest diameter wheels. The harsh ride, corrosion issues and the poor paint quality has really put me off thinking about buying one.

Have a look on Honest Johns site - there's lots of info and a road test of the 2.7d.
