im off to look at a late model XJS (1994) tommorow, however there are a couple of problems, the main one being because its been stood for a couple of years according to the owner some water has ran down the inside of the drivers and passenger window causing the solenoids to seize up making the car immpossible to get into without breaking a window. this is according to him btw. he said that he tried the fob and it bleeps but doesnt do anything other than this. i presume he has tried the key to no avail either however he has managed to get into the boot at some stage.

it struck me that surely it would be possible to open the car with just the key? maybe hes not trying hard enough???

for those interested, the car will hopefully be a light re-commision project to take to silverstone in July. it was laid up due to it needing welding to the floor pan as the same leak as mentioned above had seeped through the doors into the floor pan, however the owner tells me the car has had the floor pan replaced/welded however the leak has not been fixed??? the leak is apparantly due to a dodgy window seal.

any help on the lock issue would be much appreciated!!!

Not your question but if you can find a '95 it has the AJ16 over the AJ6....a difference worth looking for (unless they got it a year earlier in European bound-only cars). smile

the owner told me it had 'the XK' engine in it. which obviously was incorrect, maybe he meant an aj16, i hope so anyway! when i say 1994, its on an M plate, so could be a 95 i suppose?

Obviously not the Xk, that came in '97. The AJ16 is very different in appearance to the AJ6 as well; have a quick look.

id love to get a look but cant get into the ruddy thing to pop the bonnet!!! am i right in saying that the AJ16 is the lump with the silver rocker cover, usually seen in the x300's?

anyway, ive left the owner an offer which he is thinking about, so fingers crossed.

Yes, the silver rectangular cover with a (usually) green "Jaguar 4.0" across the top.

Don't want to rain on your parade, buddy. But you say the floorpans
needed welding ? It's possible the major source of water leak is from
the windscreen seals rather than the door windows.

Our car had this exact problem, and the floorpan did a good impression
of Fred Flintstone's motor ! Taking the windscreen out of an XJS coupe
is a significant undertaking which people try and bodge their way around.
So, leaking windscreen seals are ignored........bad idea.

Hopefully, your car won't be as bad, but be aware of this.
Look for water dripping from beneath the dash into the footwells.

thanks for the heads-up im fairly certain the leak is from the drivers/passenger door as the rear footwells were most badly affected, the car has been owned from 3 months old by the current owner who happens to be a friend of the family so im fairly confident of the cars history. ill be sure to check the windscreen integrity though once i eventually get into it, and tbh the price ive offered for it, should he accept i wont be worried about having to spend any more on it. again thanks for the advice, this will be my first XJS so any wise words are appreciated!

Having restored a pre facelift XJS the water can come from numerous places all of which are well known on the XJS:
1. Windscreen seals or corrosion around seals (especially bottom edges either side of the wiper grill under the chromes)
2. Damaged or missing door curtains (plastic sheeting behind door cards in the doors)
3. Blocked AC drains
4. Door seals.

If door seals or curtains are damaged then I would imagine your door cards will have a significant amount of water damaged on the hard board behind the leather.

with regards to the central locking the key will work to open the doors and then it could be the solenoids if they have had that much water around them, even just the wiring (especially the connectors) may be a bit shaky (another XJS weak link!), there are also the relays and fuses.

Hope this helps a little
