neighbour of mine now wants to join the jag owner ship and has been offered a 2002 v6 which had been run with no oil, bottom end knocking , has asked me if its a deal worth looking at and so im asking the question as not got a clue what he should do.. think its one owner full service 100k and costing £1k !! been told new shells would do the job but think poss more to that eg crank etc at the moment slight knocking any views on repairs etc etc etc thanks all

Personally I feel other problems could be there
Better to go for a recom engine or a good secondhand

I would think looking at £1,000 for the engine plus another £1k for fitting etc

Seriously, what sort of idiot wrecks an engine by running it without any lube oil? How else has said idiot abused, neglected and illtreated it? What'll it cost to fix? How do you know for sure? How much will an 02 plate, 100k, base model X Type be worth when fixed? What else might be wrong or about to go wrong? How much hassle is this all going to be?

Unless you get the answers for sure I wouldn't go near it - it might just need shells but I wouldn't bet on that. Chances are by the time it's done it'll have cost as much in money and loads more in aggravation to put right than buying a good one in the first place.

passing on the replies, he does like a bit of a challenge tho, and he has a repair budget of about 1.5k and seems to think final value of 3k ish. will pass on the horrors and let him toss a coin thanks all
