XJS v12 auto box issue

my recently rescued an 88 v12 cab from a lady who had it sat about on her drive for over 5 years.
its not as bad as i thought it would be. and after a little work it is now MOT'd small amout of welding free up the pads etc.
any way on to my point.
when driving around 70 ish crusing the box is in 3rd. getting to this point it works perfect. however if you ask for the box to change down to accellerate it will but after a second or to it changes back up. then down again then back up and so on.
the fluid is spotless and the level is correct.
any ideas?
also the car has only done 49k so i would be surprided if its worn out and every thing i have read says there bullet prof
