S-Type 3.0 can i get more HP ? + Auto box
Discussion
Just wondered if anyone had looked at squeezing more HP out of the 3.0 motor and if so what could i consider for a budget of say 2k
Can you get cat replacement pipes / sports exhaust and if so where in the midlands ?
Is chipping worth thinking about and if so what sort of improvements might i expect ?
Also just to clear up some confusion i have.... should i have the Auto box fluid changed as the car has done 82k and is a October 2003 car and although its a sealed unit i have heard it said it should be changed at some point.
Who could change the fluid if required in the Derby area without paying dealer rates ?
Cheers in advance

The engine is actually pretty well optimised already so you are not going to realistically get much more power out of it without serious surgery. Can you get cat replacement pipes / sports exhaust and if so where in the midlands ?

The biggest difference you could make is to run it on super unleaded fuel, that will enable spark advance to the maximum level and squeeze out a bit more power.
Chipping is unlikely to yield any gains.
Regarding the transmission any competent mechanic should be able to change the transmission fluid, they just need to make sure that they use the correct specification oil, and set the level at the specified temperature.
How many miles are on your S-Type?
If there are more the say 40,000 (or you don't know the cars history) and the trans has never been completly flushed with a transmission fluid exchange machine then don't have a full flush done, don't let them use any pre flush solvents or addatives. Any private garage should be able to handle doing a drain and fill on a cold transmission , they just need to remove the drain plug or drop the pan and measure how much fluid comes out and replace it with the same amount of new fluid of the proper spec, it won't change all of the fluid but it's much safer to do on a trans with some good miles on it. Transmissions that have enough mileage on them to get the fluid really dirty can and do fail shortly after having a full transmission flush.
Bring back the transmission dipstick, I say!

Hello Trooper the car has 82k and upto my ownership it has full Jag service history that is to about 70k.If there are more the say 40,000 (or you don't know the cars history) and the trans has never been completly flushed with a transmission fluid exchange machine then don't have a full flush done, don't let them use any pre flush solvents or addatives. I suspect i have a slight transmission oil leak which only shows if the car has been standing for a week or so.
It is also showing the signs of the shunting problem and the like associated with the 6 speed ZF box.
Any other advice would be welcome
Hi Pasco,
We can carry out the oil change on your gearbox for you, if the small leak you mention is from the sump/gasket or drain plug then that will be fixed at the same time as the sump is the filter on the 6 speed ZF's so that will all be new oe Jag and replaced, fluid will be from Jag too and all individually listed with part no.s on an invoice. Also we have the diagnostic capability to clear down the transmision drive cycle adaptations and check for/reprogram with the latest software so the trans ecm can re adapt, this often fixes some of the ZF's clunkiness and lurching when coming to a halt, would need to drive to advise if the problems you mention would likely benefit from this or not though.
Your mirror issue is a common one with your design of mirror, as suggested remove the painted mirror back (just unclips forward) spray a little wd40 or silicone spray around the spindle part, catch any that runs out the bottom of the mechanism with a rag rather than let it run down the door! Operate and if required give a little assistance by hand while someone else operates it for you to get it going, the alloy corodes and furs up which causes the sticking, worst on cars that don't get operated much.
As for tuning, we do sports rear boxes for the S-Type, the rest of the system flows very well, cats will offer little benefit to be honest, most people change the boxes for asthetics and sound improvement rather than performance, however we have had three seperate customers report improved fuel economy of between 3 & 5 miles per gallon which is a bonus.
