I'm changing cars and am considering my first Jag. There seem to be quite a few 3.0 V6 XJ's around with 50-70k miles at quite attractive prices. Having driven both the 3.0 V6 and the 2.7 diesel, the V6 seems to provide a nice smooth ride with not bad fuel consumption.

So, as Jaguar experts who doubtless know a lot more about these cars than I ever will, would you recommend one as a reliable daily driver? I'll probably be doing about 10k miles per year. Are there any potential maintenance nightmares to be aware of with a 50k+ miles V6?

Thanks in advance,
NL

Plenty of 3.0 cars around now at good prices too. They seem to be carrying the miles well. Don't pay over the odds for one without the touch screen sat nav. Shouldn't be too hard to exceed 30 MPG with sensible driving.

Check very carefully for evidence of corrosion or paintwork repairs, inlet manifold has to be removed for access adding to the cost of changing the plugs on the 3.0 cars, sealed for life gearbox really should have the oil changed every 50k or so for it to last.

I'd avoid any car with larger alloys - the ride, even on the smallest diameter wheels is too firm for comfort IMO. Even the bottom of the range 3.0 feels very quick and agile compared to the previous steel bodied XJs.

Lots more info on Honest John, including a extensive road test.

I looked at and drove a few 3.0s with a view to changing my older XJ8 a while ago. I'm still not sure if I could live with the air suspension ride quality and the physical size - my own XJ is enough of a PITA to park sometimes - and potential corrosion issues left concerns that the ally bodied XJ might not be the car for me.

I had a petrol 04 SE.

Great car, size did not seem to be a problem over previous 308 - front and rear sensors on 350.

Seemed a lot ligher on brakes tyres etc.

It was interesting to watch Gordon Browns travels yesterday, the blue Super V8 looked great, but the grey 350 has real presence.

I am looking at late diesels but range in prices make me wonder if they have settled yet given the new model.
