I have an Diesel x-type that has developed a wheel wobble at higher speeds and under braking.

It started initially mainly under braking when i changed front pads and discs and got worse over a period of about a month, first thoughts are that i had fitted a new warped disc and i changed these again with another new set different manufacture, this seemed to cure the problem but it has returned again after only two weeks !

Went to get front wheels balanced to rule balancing out and the garage asked why i was getting this done and when i told him symptons he said it was almost for sure a wheel bearing on its way out and that it was a common known problem on the x type.

Just wondered if anybody else has experienced this and knows of this "common issue" before getting it changed, it passed a MOT on Saturday with no play detected and i cannot hear any whine from either side and dont want to throw money at parts that might not solve problem.

Any thoughts or help appreciated.

warped discs? although that prolly wouldn't explain the high speed wobble...why do these people insist on questioning what you want to pay them to do? If I ask someone to balance my wheels, they should balance them not question me.

Im no Jag expert but if the bearings arent noisy or have obvious play, Id get the runout on the hubs checked, but first ensure the discs are fitted correctly and hub surface clean from rust etc. Check the back of the wheel as well to ensure when its on its pulling the disc on square.

Had a Porsche in a while ago with judder, did discs, checked bearings but still the same. Turns out the hub was out slightly.

I thought it was discs but after replacing one new set with another new set and the problem to return so soon feel i need to look elsewhere, his explanation was that the bearing failing was causing the discs to warp as well as causing the wobble ?.

I am not so sure but by the way he described it as a "common x type problem" thought somebody on here might be aware if it

Strangely I have a 2.0d X Type loan car today from a main dealer, and it has similar symptoms. It's fine up to to about 60 and then after that gets pretty bad by 80. The vibration through the steering wheel is annoying enough, but it's sufficiently bad to make the rear view mirror vibrate to the point of being impossible to focus in it. I just assumed it was a wheel balance issue though. The car looks like it has newish tyres and no wheel weights are evident.

Had the same problem on my last 2.5 sport & went through the same process of changing disks and pads to no avail. Eventually I found that one of my front wheels was buckled on the inside rim. I think the fwd weight shift under braking was enough to force the tyre into the buckle & cause the wobble / judder under braking. Fortunately my car had a full size spare wheel so I fitted that & the problem was solved. That car had 17" wheels.

The one I have now has 18" wheels & the Jag dealer put on a complete new set before I took delivery as the originals were buckled as well. I guess big wheels & low profile tyres are not good on the pot hole infested / speed bump ridden roads we have to endure these days.

if the discs are warped when they come off you need to look at the reason for this , sounds like a caliper starting to seize. this usually causes a vibratin through steering at about 50-60 mph. take the car for a drive and check the temp of the front wheels when u get out if one is hotter than the other that is the one with the problem.

The hubs do get destorted some times. So your bolting a new straight disc to a not quite straight hub, warps the disc again in a few 1000 miles.
