Worn crankshaft pulley damper
Discussion
Is this what is causing the whump whump sound i hear? Its a bit like a tired old washing machine.
Thing is i just got a very reputable garage to change it for a used one i bought. If it was badly worn too - i am sure they woulda called and said its no good, but they fitted it.
The only difference the new one has made is that the fan belt has stopped squealing.
Any other ideas? I think that this has caused the restricted perf light to come on too.
Does it maybe need a new crankshaft?
Any xk8 wizards in edinburgh willing to have a look?

Hope you got a big wallet cause that "cheap" XK8- as you described in your previous post - is soon gonna get very expensive!!
Sorry to hear of your woes but as I said before - there's no such thing as a cheap XK.
i know - not too bad tho - i did put a few quid aside - 3k for problems. only spent £500 so far.Sorry to hear of your woes but as I said before - there's no such thing as a cheap XK.
And that includes the insurance - which was only £150 fully comp. so its not all bad. Car now has yrs MOT too.
So many good spares websites out there too.
Hi, gordon,
Glad to see you got through the mot without major issues. Some teething problems with a newly aquired car are inevitible. I don't think you have a serious problem though. That noise might be something related to the accessory drive belt or tensioner, and restricted performance issues are usually ignition related. You might have a faulty coil pack, or a bad plug.
I really can't understand the negative posts on here, just because you found a bargain. Maybe those who paid far more for an XK also get their share of problems.

Thanks mate - well its going back to the garage and i do not expect to pay them to fix what they have now had 2 attempts at - although i am sure they will be reasonable as i have always found them to be good.Glad to see you got through the mot without major issues. I feel if this gets fixed that will be me on easy street for a while. Although i noticed the air-con is'nt freezing cold - but again, that is a very minor issue.
I am prepared to spend money properly to fix things - just because i wanted a bargain car does'nt mean i want bargain fixes.
Thanks again for the CD too.

I think whats worrying mxi - is that he is trying to sell one older than mine with a lot more miles, for a lot more money!Glad to see you got through the mot without major issues. Sad to see it go really as its a beautiful car and I'm sure you'll get yours sorted but theres no way I would buy another for cheap money because one way or another they will cost.
Good luck with yours

If you got yer asking price then there is hope for me as i have less miles and a new engine only 14k miles ago!
Well done if you got that price tho.
I would be delighted right now to get 6.5k......
My next xk - hopefully will be an xkr and will be fairly new - it needs to wait tho - trying to change jobs and finding it tricky......
