Hello

Have put a deposit down on an S-Type R and driven it etc

Mileage is 79,000 but when looking through the Service History noticed an entry saying instrument cluster pack replaced (in 2003 I think). Was told that mileage on new pack would have been re-set to true but now having doubts. Didn't look too closely at the date when it occurred or the mileages on the service history to check that these ran in sequence (is all Jag Main Dealer servicing from new to 6 months ago).

How can I be sure that I don't need to add X thousand miles to the reading ? Would Jaguar re-set the mileage ?

How can I check and /or what should I do ?

Many thanks

Due to the fact that it has been done at a main dealers and documented on the history, i wouldn't worry about the mileage, The dealer would have transfered the mileage over to the new set up. A carefull look through the service history should confirm the mileage.

Thanks Pete

I'm worried that other Jag owners with instrument pack failures fixed by Jaguar (X-Types mainly)had theirs set to zero and they must therefore add the pre change mileage to the current mileage. I believe that instrument pack failure was common on S-Types from 2002 also (like this one) so was hoping someone would be able to clarify if maybe it happened to them. Or if the mileage does sometimes get re-set. Or if it lives remote from the instrument pack and would auto display the correct mileage when new pack plugged in etc

Am kicking myself for not asking the right questions at the time. Dealer is 120 mile round trip so can't just pop back.

Damn !

The best thing to do is, ring a main dealer and find out what the procedure is for the instrument, the odometer is normally a part in it's own right, they would have no need to change it, there would surely be a note in the history if they had reset it! Also the dealer you are buying from would be legally obliged to point out any mileage discrepancies, i would give them a ring also. Did the car look and feel it's mileage when you drove it? Is it usedjags.com ho you are buying from?

You could phone them and ask - they probably have the records.

Just looked on the website at your car. That's stunning! It was owned by jaguar employee (obviously someone high up!) and it has all the mots and history, a quick call will put your mind at rest. I wouldn't worry if it was me. I love these cars, you are very lucky!!

Hi Pete / Simpo

Yes. Nice people to deal with and some cracking cars. Am not blaming them as I suspect they didn't notice (may be selling for a client). The acid test will be how well they deal with the deposit refund.

As far as I can tell the mileage gets re-set to zero when the instrument pack is changed on S-Types and X-Types. All part of the same sealed unit. Plenty of people confirming same on another forum. Jag always do this for audit trail purposes I guess (so there's never any query about whether was re-set or set to zero) and they would hardly give dealers software to start monkeying around with mileages which they would have to do to re-set new instrament cluster to previous instrument cluster figure. These things are (supposed to be) tamper proof !!

The car has had 5 owners. The alledged Jag employee (4 years) is supposed to be the last owner but I didn't look that closely at the V5 to see if the immediate previous owner had had the car since 2006 (yes - stupid me -but I was buying from a reputable dealer and paying top(ish) price precisely so I didn't have to worry about such things).

MOT's (and service history) won't help establish the mileage as the issue occurred in the early years. Could have been re-set to zero and done a shed load of miles before next service so then looked like a natural progression but with a "lost" 20k miles (or whatever).

Not the end of the world for me or the dealer. They give me my deposit back (it's only £250 so unlikely to be an issue for them) and they can then sort out whatever they need to do in their own time. It is a shame, it's a lovely car but I've lost confidence in it now. Oh well, never mind, plenty more fish in the sea.......

Let's hope not Markymark !

It's not the money really it's more the feeling like a chump for not following a strict car buying process and seeing this coming.

I'm sure they will do the decent thing. They can't be that bothered and haven't done any work on the car on my behalf or registered it to me or whatever. They said there were others after it who were dissapointed so no shortage of takers. If I were them I'd give me my money back to get rid of me and just sell to someone else.......
