A while ago I posted looking for help on a rotational squeaking that was coming from the rear offside wheel or thereabouts and although there were suggestions it was never fixed. Since then I have phoned around various main dealer service departments with varying results.

At last a very experienced service manager at Royles in Wilmslow said "Yep...I know what that is...."
This was after I described its like the sound you make when lightly whistling through your teeth.

Now I have not got the car back from my mechanic, but will be up there tomorrow testing this guys theory. The definitive test to prove this is the fault is to very very lightly apply the handbrake and see if the sound goes away. All this while hanging yer head out the window....

What he said is that inside the handbrake mechanism / drum there is a lower spring that vibrates and whistles and there was actually a Jaguar service bulletin saying that the mod was to put a rubber sleeve over the spring.

This was an issue with the 1998, 1999 and some 2000 X308's and the mod was available in 2000.

He reckons that they may no longer have the parts to fix it but is looking into this for me.

Has anyone else heard of this ? Or was it a dream ?

It's the price you pay for having such a quiet car... the most irksome noise in my old XJ40 was the leather upholstery squeaking very slightly! (Couldn't hear the ticking of the clock at all)

Hi, my mechanic told me of potential vibration issues from the handbrake hubs, he said that there was a technical service bulletin regarding it, it was quite a time ago, not sure if it is the same as your whistle though.

I have a suggestion.

My old 1998 xjr used to have this squeaky drive noise which I would only hear in carparks , at low speed with the windows open. It wasn't a constant squeak but sounded like a squeaky wheel on a shopping trolley or something.

It was a kinda noise that metal makes when rubbing on metal, no grinding noise, but a metallic squeaky noise.

It gradually got louder over months but never loud enough to notice other than in carparks.

I also had a bearing going, I could hear it when above 30mph so booked it in, they diagnosed a rear hub bearing, despite me hearing the noise from the front NS. :frown:

Turns out the rear hub bearing had been rotating in the hub, this is what was causing the metallic squeaky noise and had right royally screwed up the bearing surface inside the rear offside hub. New hub fitted, squeak gone.

Then back 2 days later to get the front hub, which is what I had put it in for originally, to get replaced as it still groaned above 30mph!

Edited becuase even I couldn't leave so many dyslexic finger mistakes in 1 post!

ETA: Actually, the more I read your post, the more like mine it sounds... like gently whistling through your teeth to make a pulsing squeaky whistle.

Piersman2 may have it.

Just for the record, the bulletin regarding the modification requires part number MNF 2796 AA. They are described as a bush sleeve and are available, only cost a quid each.

This incidentally has not fixed my problem, so I will opt for a new hub.

Forgive my ignorance, is the item simply called a wheel hub ?

Hi Zippy,

The garage I used booked it in initially to just change out the wheel bearing, it was when they started on the job to remove the bearing that they noticed that the bearing had been rotating in the hub and that it had effectively made the hub surface too loose and damaged to re-fit a new bearing. New hub required, new bearing required. It's called the hub, not sure how you could check it's condition without stripping everything down and taking the bearing out though.

Best of luck, keep us informed how it goes.

I had something similar from the front nearside of my X300. Wheel bearing was replaced (these are notoriously weak on the front on the X300 for some reason - subsequently had the offside replaced with no issues). However, although the new wheel bearing was an improvement, it didn't sort it. It was adjusted, greased, tightened and loosened, but nothing would stop this squeak. It wasn't until I had the brakes done (callipers, discs and pads) that the noise disappeared.
It may have been a loose brake shoe, or it could have fixed itself when the new brakes were put on and the wheel re-aligned - I've no idea!

Yeah, its one of those issues that you probably never really understand what was causing the fault and end up replacing several compnents, there is a new hub on the car and i should get it back this weekend.

I will report back...

The rotational squeak has been fixed. Its difficult to pin down the exact cause, but we put a new hob on and associated "bits" and voila. There was a fair bit of corrosion on the bolts which could have been a contributory factor.
