96, 97, 98, xk8 convertibles, there are some out there for 6k ish with fjsh, miles are high at 125k upto 146k. they read fine in the text with all the usual niggles sorted. can one really get a good one for this money ??? I have never been put off by high miles as it tells me that to get there they are well looked after. right or wrong ? whats the gen view please as tempted for the summer period then back to the coupe for winter ..

I assume you are aware of the problems with the engines on V8's of that age?

Nikasil
Water pump
Chain tensioners

and also the 'sealed for life' gearboxes will have been in dire need of an oil change for some time if this hasn't been done.

Other then that I would expect the suspension bushes to be in need of replacement if it's not been done, wheel bearings maybe? I'm sure it would be possible to get a good one, if the miles are up and down the motorway it should be fine. I guess the only way to answer your question is to go look at some and see what condition they are in. I'd say look at 5 and if they are all rough after that you have your answer.

spoke to one chap, says the A frame bushes v mounts floor pan tensioners and gear box refurb all done within couple years with receipts, no smoke from engine and would have suffered from nikasil by now also early days of cars life were in midlands so poss not in the early high sulpha areas..seems to be worth a look.. thanks for your view just wanted to get a gen feedback from any one taken the plunge at that money, cheers

rolleyes Nikasil, all problems have long since disappeared. Water pumps etc. at 100K + miles I would be really surprised if they had not had them done at least once. Gearbox oil and tensioners should have been done too.

A £6k XK8 might be a bargain , however a bad one will cost you that again to fix. Check all the above , plus suspension and rust ! Quite a few reports on the xkec and Jaguar forums of rust setting in frown

I agree that Nikasil is a red herring, it would all be sorted by now.

I have just bought an XKR and paid twice your budget - but i know i'm still facing £1000 of work for tensioners, water pump, bushes and track rod ends. Just make sure you have a slush fund ..... just in case

Great quality car tho & mines a rocket ship

I agree the Nikasil should not be a problem now

But with any car over ten years old you are the the hands of who has had it before and how well they looked after the car

My XKR has done 170K now but although I do USE it I'm always making sure all is in order

You best bet would be to join the XK8/R Owners Club www.xkec.co.uk
They have a verry lively Members Forum with all the known issues and advise on getting your car looked after

NormanD = Have you had tensioners & chains done, water pump etc

I'm just interested to see if its a must or whether some are lasting your kind of mileage on original parts

Yes twice, had the mark 2 type fitted they then went and then replaced with the steel mark 3

I have since had a 4.2 Lt engine installed. There wasn't anything wrong with the 4Lt, infact it is someone elses car, just I was lookng for max power etc from the twin screw supercharger I've got on the engine
