Hi All,

A good friend of mine is looking at an '04 XK8 with 35k on the clock. The car is a Cat D and we are unaware of any history. I would usually advise him to walk but he is going in with his eyes open and intends to keep the car for years so isnt bothered by the usual Cat D issues. What I am struggling with is putting a value on the car. Can anyone help please?

TIA

As I understand it Cat D takes 20-30% off the value. If the car checks out, you simply buy for less and sell for less, no massive issue to those in the know.

ETA: If you phone a Jaguar dealer and give them the registration (or chassis number in case it's had different plates) they will be able to tell you the history and any recalls. And of course get an HPI check and see if there is any 'interest' in the car.

I was thinking of wading in on behalf of my friend at around 12k which would represent a worthwhile saving to have the later car with its six speed box etc. so it should work out ok providing all is good with locating the service history. thanks for your help.

If it were me, I'd want to know what the damage was, and then check it has been well repaired. Where was it down? Has it passed at least an MOT since then so you have some idea that it's safe. If it was a bad accident I'd want to have the wheel alignment checked, if it can be set to Jaguar spec the chassis probably isn't too badly twisted...unlikely but still...

Steer clear. Unless you know what happened, who repaired it and how, it could give no end of issues. Car may have been left out in the rain, water egress into the electrics, eventual corrosion of said electrics and a lot of headaches. There are plenty of XK's to choose from, what maybe cheap in initial outlay, could cost a fortune in the mid term, so buy a nice used crash free XK.
