xj8 faulty instrument cluster
Discussion
The Instrument Pack (IP) is responsible for generating all the displays to which you refer, and also comunicates with the Gearshift Interlock Controller (which controls the solenoid)- so it (the IP) could be the common component in your fault tree.
I've had a quick look at JTIS to see how the two items receive their power, and although I can see the IP feed (LH heelboard fuse 14) I can't see the other one.
It's just possible that they share a fuse and that one has taken the other out.
Suggest you carefully check ALL fuses, and if one has blown then temporarily disconnect the GIC solenoid before you replace it.
JTIS is your friend in all this - though I have found the occasional error in some of the schematics...

appreciate the help zulu10.
i actually bought the car with this problem. previous owner had tried a replacement cluster. the replacement one works for about 2 seconds. ie you can select a gear from park and the rev counter works but only for a couple of seconds. after that it displays numerous system faults such as gearbox and safe mode and incorrect part fitted. could it be that i just need to have keys reprogrammed?

The difficulty with swapping replacement parts is that unless they have exactly the same software load then it's not guaranteed that they'll work correctly.
In the boot, possibly inside the wheel well is a VCATS sticker that lists what software was loaded into each control module on production. If the new Instrument Pack has different version software (shoudl be a sticker on it) then you'll need to get it reloaded before going any further. (I'd like to be corrected but I think that only Jag dealers can achieve that).
A few odd sounding questions if I may:
Firstly what fault codes are you seeing?
In the first couple of seconds; does everything work correctly?
Are the symptoms identical to what was onserved with the previous instrument pack?
Has the fuel level indication been prone to swing or behave erratically?
Does switching on the headlights dip and main cause the engine speed to vary?

car produced 11 codes. i cant remember what they were but i'll try chasing that up
only differences are as described with the gear stick release and the temporary rev counter and the list of faults that doesn't come up with the origial ip
never seen the fuel meter move at all
headlights have no adverse effects
the car occasionally stalls. but i've attributed this to a hose in the engine bay near the oil filler cap that has an air leak. looks like a bodged fix using at least 1 tube of silicone
thanks again for advice. will check for software codes
