Selling Jag... private plate question
Discussion
Quick question as I've not done this before but I'm sure a few of you have.
I'm probably going to sell my XKR soon and just wondered what to do about getting the private plate off as I'd like to keep this. What's the process to do this and how long does it take? I assume it's not a quick turnaround so I guess I need to kick this off now before selling the car?
Only concern with swapping plates now is that if the car doesn't sell or I don't get a reasonable price I'll keep it. Which will mean putting the plate back on and associated cost.
Cheers,
Graham

To keep it simple, get the reg put on retention. Should take no more than 2 weeks to get the V5C back, normally with it's old reg. You can still sell the car without the new V5C, but it would be extremely unwise as you are still liable & responsible for the car until the V5C with new keeper is returned to DVLA.
Alternatively, as you are unsure you can/will sell, you can sell the car as is with the plate. The new keeper will own the reg, but if you sell to a decent chappie as I did, in order to speed up the process, they complete the retention paperwork so as to be in your name. This can't be done until they receive their new V5C showing the car is in their name. This can therefore take 3 times as long!

Get it on retention before selling gets my vote. That way you are sure you have the right to the plate, rather than relying on the "goodwill" of the buyer to do the necessary paperwork after the sale to get you your plate. I had a nervy time when purchasing my Jag with the private plate being on the part-ex and relying that all the paperwork would go through even though the part-ex was already on another dealer's forecourt with my reg still on it! (Jaguar dealer was handling the private plate transfer as part of the purchase)

I've swapped plates my plate loads of times and also have friends who have done the same, never been asked for an inspection.
Possibly this requirement only applies when you are taking a registration off the original vehicle for the first time?
No, they pick cars at Random. The new owner of my Ferrari 456 wasnt very happy about a compulsory 200 mile round trip - hence i would advise to put it on retention asap if you are going to sell.Possibly this requirement only applies when you are taking a registration off the original vehicle for the first time?
