Hello All,

I'm contemplating an X-Type 3.0 manual as they seem quite a bargain at the moment.

With a top line of £4000 the budget will be rather tight but there's plenty floating around with FSH and under 80,000 for that price.

So my question is what is the reliability like?

Are there any potential horrors I should be aware of?

Thanks,

Gareth

We have a 3Lt X-Type manual estate

Only two problems, one the display went down so new screen and satnav DVD player changed under warranty
Second the locking went funny so a another drivers door lock pack, this was second hand so not to much money

I did ask about the display if it should go down again now it's out of warrantee
Being a good independent he said he would get a used one for us that way saving a lot of £££

Other than that all is fine

I've driven a friends manual 3 litre, they seem to be the one to go for, the auto can be problematic. The one i drove seemed very quick and handled very well.

Have a trawl through http://www.carsurvey.org/ (free)

I checked my cars on there and was gobsmacked to see all the faults I had were listed on the reviews.

I love mine. Bought it at 32000 miles from Jaguar (it was a company car) for £6400 two years ago. It has now done 52000 miles and the only non service items that have failed are rear halfshafts and the sump gasket. It's great to drive, handles brilliantly, comfy, nice build quality. The manual gearbox is good to use. Demerits - it uses as much fuel as my wife's XK8 convertible, it gets through rear tyres quite rapidly and it sometimes feels as if it could do with a 6th gear on long motorway trips.

had a 3.0 manual sport for just over a year. No problems at all - other than i'd love to know where the official figures of 0-60 in 6.6 secs come from. Good cars though + id recommend them

Had my Manual 3.0 X-Type for about 4 years.

Always started first time. Never got stuck in the snow. It has been my best ever car (except for my weekend toy! wink )

The guy who's 3 litre i drove has got a mate with a very nice mondeo st220,i was expecting it to be quicker than the jag, but it can't get close, the jag leaves it standing. Most importantly, it has been 100% reliable, he had a 3 seris BMW before this jag and he said it was a nightmare and low rent. The x type is 54 plate with 102k on the clock and still feels tight and looks almost new, he loved it during the winter months. At these prices i'm tempted myself!

Can't say I really rate that website to be honest mate. It's just a bunch of Americans complaining.

ReliabilityIndex.com seems to rate them quite highly (which is based on a little more accuate warranty claims).

Cheers though.

Despite the fact I agree with the scientific concensus regarding global warming I can't say that my 6000 miles a year will contribute much to it.

It doesn't really factor in to my what car decisions and never has.

About 22mpg?

Christ that's a little low. Along with rear tyre wear I'm guessing you drive it pretty hard for that?

my best mate is after one of these cars and it is reassuring to know that nothing much seems to go wrong with them, other than (according to reliability index) having to listen out for whining transmission and checking the transfer box works ok, but how do you do the latter?
