looking for performance and economy and interested in learning more about remapped / modded 3 litres or either of the diesels - I appreciate they are chalk and cheese!

I have an X-Type 2.2D and am thinking of getting a tuning box rather than a remap. I think the remap is much more expensive, a tuning box you can pick up from £160 and fit it in 5 minutes. I could up the horses from 155 to about 180 - 190bhp. The tuning box gives you potentially improved mpg as well as it changes the power curve making smooth more efficient power delivery.

Google Diesel Performance chip, you will find quite a few options. The chip I want will give 194bhp, just need to see if won't turn my gearbox and clutch to mince meat.

I don't know about the petrol variants, so I apologise if i've gone off on one and it's no use to your question!

Regards,

Bob

There is no point in remapping the Petrol XTypes as they have hardly any affect on NA cars.

On the Jaguarforum, the jag techs said that turbos and superchargers were out too because:
A) There is not much space under the bonnet
B) The AWD transmission would not handle much more power anyway!

Go for a ride in a 3.0 - there is enough power anyway and will blow the Deisel versions away. (3.0 Manual does 0-60 MPH in 6.58 seconds!)

ETA: As for MPG, my 3.0 Manual averages about 27mpg over a tank of fuel and can get 32mpg on a long run using cruise control (cruise is not usually on Sport spec cars - you need the SE or Sport Premium). If you have a heavy foot, expect low 20's. the Auto 3.0s will be worse than this. If you are worried about fuel costs, it might be worth getting the deisel.

cheers guys - keep me posted re your attempt at 200 bhp in the 2.2

as you say alternatively I should try 3 litre - drove the 2.5 and it was v slow - the 2.0 diesel felt quicker with the torque surge

An LPG 3 litre would be nice if avail or a 200 hp diesel - both manual SEs

I've driven the X type 3.0 manual back to back with a Mondeo ST 220, the Jag was and felt quicker than the ST, as mush as i liked the ST, the Jag just felt more special. The 0-60 puts it up there with the X300 XJR, so it's no slouch. I am very tempted to get the X type next, a very nice and underrated car.

Went from an E34 540i to an 02 plate 3.0 SE, manual.

Just as quick (the 540i was similar 0-60), not as heftily built or wafty by some way but still feels very good, lovely place to travel and being a nun I get good MPG - 37.5 is my best on a long run. Motorways usually 35-36mpg, town around 24mpg.

Service parts are laughably cheap after the BMW too.

The only mod I'd make to mine is some decent tyres - it has old P6000s on it and they're a bit past it. Plenty of tread but just old and hard!

The engineering behind these tuning boxes is terrible - basically they trick the car into overfuelling. I can well imagine this could cause issues with sooting up of EGR valves and turbos, something you're really going to want to avoid.
