Learned somethign new today which might be of interest to folks!
I've been doing some digging around. Apparently the regs have been introduced recently which make it illegal to sell non type approved cats for cars after 2001 'ish.
So my man who can get cheap parts can find 2 suppliers with the cats on their shelves, but they are not allowed to sell them (since 13th November) as they are not type approved.
He can't find any type approved ones and has been told that as the volumes are likely to be low for cars lke XJRs that it is unlikely that anyone, other than the OE, will bother getting type approval.

He has sourced some from a contact at Jaguar for £522 each, but that's not really the bargain I was hoping for as the stealer is quoting £867 each fitted.

My mate has had to return over 150 cats from his branch alone! There must be thousands and thousands of non-approved cats all over the place.

Indeed. I'm fortunate that the error light has stayed extinguished since the service so I assume the flow through the cats is marginally poor, and probably only 1 cat so the contact at Jag says. But knowing what the dealers are like no doubt they wouldn't be able to diagnose which one and would want to replace them both.So the car is fine to drive but if/when the light comes back on it will fail the MOT with the light on.
So I have about 6 months to worry about the cats

I wonder if poor flow through the cats explains why this one gets 2mpg less than my last one

What you're all missing is that it is illegal for the sellers to sell them, they've all been sent back from the distributors becuase they're not allowed to sell them. £5000 fines so any 'legit' firm is not going to risk the hassle by releasing the non-approved unless they are for a vehicle prior to march 2001.
However, there is a loop hole in the regs where it says they can be supplied for single vehicle approval cars. I wonder if I can contact the suppliers and say I'm looking for a pair for a kit car special I'm putting together?

The VDCA whoever they are. I don't suppose they'll inspect an individual car , and I'd have no hesitation fitting some, but you can't get them! No one legit will sell them on for fitment to a car after 2001.

Could be a bit of a black market for these non-approved

See if any of your guys can physically buy catalytic convertors for a 2007 XJR anymore from any of their suppliers?
If they can let me know because my mate, who manages a parts distribution warehouse can't.

Do you know what the fault code(s) is/are on your car? Catalyst failures are often misdiagnosed. I also don't see where you need to change both banks. I would think it unlikely that there's a problem with both banks at the same time. You mentioned that it's been to a Jaguar dealer - presumably they are pushing Jaguar for a goodwill contribution on your behalf?

No. The car went in for service (e.g. oil change), they gave me a list of things that 'needed' doing and apparently the cats are causing the engine light code, something to do with too much back pressure, I assume they are a bit blocked. Not an issue apparently, just won't pass the MOT with the light on so I need to get it sorted in the next few months.And yes, you're not the only one to point out that it's probably only 1 cat, but dealers don't think like that do they, computer fault code flow chart says change both cats... ker ching...£1600 to customer.
And the garage are not too interested in chasing stuff on my behalf as I didn't buy the car from them.
I had to twist their arm and argue with the feckwit service receptionist about the terms of the 6 year corrosion warranty so that they would contact Jaguar for approval to fix my boot lid. Which they are doing
