Just heard the sad news that Tom Walkinshaw has died.TWR became very closely associated with high perfomance racing Jaguars and he could make an XJS skim across the surface like no one else. RIP TOM.

I'm sure there will be lots of derogatory comments forthcoming about his business habits, but I will always remember him for bringing Jaguar back to the winners podium at Le Mans. Seeing the '88 LM winning car on a Cub Scouts trip is what ignited my passion for motorsport.

RIP Tom. frown

The man was responsible for bringing Ross Brawn into F1 with Benetton and Michael Schumacher from Jordan. With Arrows he had then world champion Damon Hill drive for him , but with TWR he should have given the Le Mans drive to chief tester Dave Coyne, instead of Jan Lammers imho.Coyne was the quicker driver.Quicker by far than No1 Win Percy. Lammers was imho a second rate driver, his family had the money to invest in TWR if daddies boy got a drive, at Coynes` expense. Didn`t like what he did to Brian Harts` F1 company either, bad management ruined a good company. After TW had finished sacking everyone and with his own engineers, the Hart engine was producing some 30 BHP less.
How long did it last afterwards? It didn`t.
Still what he did for Jaguar was exceptional.

And who could forget Hill's drive at the Hungaroring the bloody car might have let him down at the end, but oh boy what a drive.

Don't forget the XJ220 some hate it, I love it. But it also led to the DB7 and the survival of Aston Martin.

The mods closed the topic over in the classics group and redirected everyone to the main thread lamenting the loss of one of motoring's great characters
