After passing the 40 milestone, I've been told to "grow up" by the wife - I had been looking at an E46 M3, or a Z4/C. So I've been looking at post 2006 XKRs - possible a convertible (The XKs look like they are lacking a little power). I can't stretch to the newer 5.0 models. Probably the low £30k mark. Just wanted to know what owners experiences are? How do they compare to previous motors you've owned? I've had Jags in the past and always liked the aura associated with the brand but felt that they lacked the driving experience - one was auto, the other manual which was hard to drive smooth when you were tanking it. From what I've read, the post 2006 XKs have a gearbox that allows you to drive full auto or use the paddle shift when you want some more involvement. Soundsjust the ticket. How do higher mileage ones fair - I won't be doing a huge amount, so I may be able to get newer albeit one with higher miles. What are the options I should look for?
Thanks in advance.

Tell your wife to be quiet, unless she wants to be traded in for a younger model that will appreciate your youthful spirit. wink

You can get a 30k miler for around £25k.

Great cars. I love mine and have done for the last two years.

Yes you are right that you can have them fully auto or use the paddles. You can have the gearbox in auto, sports auto, use the paddles in auto and the box will drop back to full auto after a few seconds or semi manual if the box is in sports auto. In Sports auto the box will stay in whichever gear you selected using the paddles.

Early XK-Rs should be available around your budget. I don't think you will find them under powered compared to your other options wink

Compared to the older Jaguars you are used to, the 2006- XKR's are far more sporting & less GT. The 4.2 models are 'Sports GT's', far more exciting to drive than the old steel ones. 420BHP has enough punch.

As for options, IMHO the best ones to get are the launch model XKR's (Nov reg. '56plates). They had the good stuff like 20 inch Sentas alloys, lux sport interior, heated front screen, active lights, premium sound, for starters. The first ones had all these as options, so make finding a high spec one harder. Sept '07, it had a mini going over. The run out 4.2's are also good buys with the sports set up & nice alloys. The 5.0 cars move the game on so much further.......

Thanks for all the info.
Love the sound of the gearbox - best of all worlds.
I probably wasn't clear with my XK remark regrding "underpowered". What I should of said was that the base XK model with 300hp isn't enough for me. Now 420hp.... and we're talking!
And thanks for the heads up on the options.

I'm just going to have a nose around your profiles to see what you've driven in the past.

Just turned 40 too ... out of mid life crisis, traded my toys and bought an XKR 07 4.2 cab. All i can say is that it is epic and as much power as some proper stuff i've owned ... an M3 is a hair dryer by comparison winksmile

Errr, I'm 30 and seriously considering an '07 XKR. These aren't old man cars anymore, thank god! Definitely keen to hear owners' experiences, especially the running costs. I'd probably buy from a main dealer to get a fully prepped and warranted car and my current car barely breaks through the 22mpg ceiling.

I'm 27 and will be selling the Porsche and getting a 07/08 REG XKR coupe this April.

Jaguar is not what it used to be. It is the most exciting brand at the moment. The jaguar XFR is as good as the BMW M5, the jaguar XFS 3.0 V6 Diesel is a stunning motor that has one of the best diesel engines ever made in my opinion. 0-60 in 5.9 secs for a diesel!
The new XJR is BEAUTIFUL! There is talk of a Jaguar 4x4 and a new 2 seated sports car in a similar mould to the E-Type. The new XKR 5.0 is a BEAST!

I think it has definetly shaken off its boring old man image and i for one can't wait to be behind the steering wheel of a Jag.

Roll on April!

I've just got a contract position that is 2 miles from my home. So I may have to keep the M3 for another 6 months to a year frown No point buying an XKR just yet if it's going to sit on my drive not being used depreciating away.

There is never a 'right' time to buy an expensive car. You could be dead by next year, go buy one & drive the 'long' route to work. ;-)

There is a right time to buy in terms of finances!

Does the XKR take roof rails?

Asking a question like that is automatic disbarment from this forum.

NO, and for a reason!

I took an e36 Evo in as part exchange against my Cerbera with a view of moving it on.... that was 2 1/2 years ago! I effectively paid £5.5k for it. I reckon she's still worth £3.5k. She hasn't cost me anything other than normal servicing and consumables. Cheap motoring at its best! I would struggle to justify a £30k+ motor for a couple of thousand miles a year when I move jobs.
