Well after 200,000 trouble free miles in BMWs I have had my first fault in my Jag after 500 miles frown

I really wanted this to be reliable but with 1500 on the clock on my 2010 XF 3.0d S PL, and 1mth old the car will not start. Battery fault I believe.

Had a big run on weekend so cannot understand why.

Any ideas before I visit dealer Wednesday, assuming I can get there....

This happenned to me three times in a week! So your seems like a similar fault to mine, after the recovery people telling me all sorts of stories about how my blackberry was running the battery down and others about setting the alarm I took it to my dealer, Marshalls of Peterborough, who within minutes diagnosed a duff battery and had a new one fitted and me on the road in an hour. Didn't appear to be an unusual problem but since the new battery, 3 months ago, no issues.

Not surprised to hear this. My XF had a litany of electrical problems that eventually persuaded me to get rid after 15 months of ownership. Hopefully you won't have the same problems, mine was a very early car (Nov '07) so I guess I took a gamble and it failed.

Shame, it was a lovely car but I completely lost confidence in it.

Really a pain. Nothing like this from the BMW.

I really want to like this car....

Not good to hear Matt.

My father's first XF (59 plate 3.0D Lux) had a plethora of problems which I think I've detailed elsewhere on this forum. Managed to swap it at nearly 12 months old for a "NEW" 3.0D Premium Lux - which so far has been faultless (currently 5 months old)

Sounding like the 1970's and 80's with the notorious Jag "reliability".

I love the XF but reading these posts makes me a little reluctant to race out and buy one.

but don't forget the thousands of happy punters who don't post on forums to say how satisfied they are; its usually only those with a (understandable) gripe who air it in these places. Sure my XFR had a real issue with bluetooth/phone probs - but I still love it!

Had a 6 Series Beemer and in the first 12 months it spent 48 days at the dealer !! I would suggest its software related and possibly needs re flash.

If it helps, I know of a 750i that's had catastrophic engine failure up after less than 1000 miles. Currently stuck in a dealership awaiting a complete new engine.

This. Forums are collecting grounds for problems.

It seems daft to buy a car you don't really want just because you think it might be more reliable. If reliability was so important we'd all have Toyota pickups!

Relibility has to be the most important aspect of any car surely?

I don't want bits falling off or any issues with some novelty feature of the vehicles electrics when I turn the key at 5.30am, nor do I want to be stranded in a lay by waiting for the tow truck and end up forking out hundreds, maybe thousands of pounds sorting out some basic design faults or software fkups on stuff you don't really need in the first place once the warranty has expired either.

Like the Honda advert says - Why can't things just work?

My dad bought a brand new XF.S a few months back and had same problem. Car would just die for no reason. Went in and out of dealership and could not find fault. Eventually it was put down to a faulty battery. Battery was changed and no fault since.
BTW the XFS........What a fantastic car!

Well, if it was, we'd all driving whatever is top of JD Power - and you'd be 'Honda Steve' smile I buy a car primarily on looks and image, and assume an acceptable level of reliability is fitted as standard.

I know nowt about Jag's but there was a post here or somewhere where someone with a recent Jag wasn't using the handbrake when parking and the car though that = they weren't stopping long and kept all the systems primed and ready for action.

matt21, good luck with the XF, we had so many problems with a Discovery 3 that we sold after 18 months and I felt slightly nervous buying another JLR product when I changed my BMW for an XFS. For me so far so good in 5000 miles (although one piece of plastic trim under the bonnet had to be replaced ), whilst 2 of my last 3 BMW's had a few niggles initially before settling down. In contrast my last S-type did 60k miles trouble free in 2 1/2 years.

Its such a lovely car to own and drive that I hope the XFS begins to meet or exceed your reasonable expectations.
