Just wondering about the possible demand for a superb quality veneered stereo facia plate to allow the fitting of a standard single din stereo in the X308 / XK8?
bit of a numpty question. would a replacement heat unit be compatible with the steering wheel controls?would love a head unit that i could plug my iphone into and maybe a usb stick too
That i havent looked that far into, but to be honest iv come to the conclusion that i can live without my CD changer and steering wheel controls in favour of a decent head unit.
What i couldnt live with before was some sort of bodge DIY facia plate, but i have now found a man i have the faith in to produce the needed goods perfectly.

What i am going to do is buy a couple of original stereos off ebay one for my XJ8 and one for my XK8 to save me pulling my cars to bits. Then let him have a fiddle and tool up for the job, its no big mystery http://www.myrtleltd.com/ will be doing the work, i am in no way profiting from this, i just started the thread to show Paul that there would be a demand for a quality product.
All i can say is this mans work is superb and reasonably priced, he can match pretty much any veneer.

With regard to the replacement head unit, there was an article a while back in Jaguar Enthusiast, about a guy, who had an X308, he found that a certain model of Kenwood, the model number escapes me at the moment, but I am looking
, single DIN, was compatible with the CAN bus, from memory he was able to retain the steering wheel controls, got the phone working through it, and it had a direct connection to either USB, SD Card or 3.5mm headphone jack, cant remember which, that is how he got his ipod hooked up. I will see if I can find the model number and will post it up.

If there was a head unit which linked in to the steering wheel controls I would be intrested in the hardware required to slot it in.

You can get steering wheel adaptors:

OK, so to finish my contribution to this thread, in the end I got a fascia adaptor from Hardtofinddashkits which came in at about £80 delivered from the US. Took a week to arrive, and I've just (mostly) finished fitting it and my Kenwood BT60U.
The finish of the fascia is spot on. Using the Autoleads harness adaptor the wiring is plug and play, and the sound quality is much improved.
I still need to wire in the mic (I forgot) and the stereo surround trim needs filing down to fit the new location, but otherwise all is good.
I've subsequently found a harness adaptor that might work with the steering wheel controls, so I'll get hold of one of those and give it a try too.
Pics to follow once it's all complete.
But a big
to Greg at Hardtofinddaskkits.com for some sterling service.

Sounds like a good pointer there. I am looking for one of these.
For info, I have programmed a microcontroller to read the wheel buttons of an X100 XK8/R and translate the signal into what a Blaupunkt stereo wants. It is currently working well in my car.
I am also working on a microcontroller to interface the satnav buttons to the satnav computer in the boot in place of the standard stereo. So far, I have the button reader completed, but have not finished the AI-net output. This device could easily be used to allow the satnav buttons to talk to a serial port etc.
