Hello, some pictures would be great. I can't help with your problem as I've not encountered it. I'm sure someone on here will give some ample advice.

Sounds like the diff output shaft brearing. Jack up the rear of the car until the wheel is off the ground. Push the wheel - at the 12 o'clock position - inwards, towards the diff. If there is play, chances are it's the differential output shaft bearing. The only other place it could be is the half-shaft universal joints. Get someone to push the wheel inwards and let it fall outwards while you look/feel for play - mind those fingers as you could get them trapped between the output shaft flange and the diff casing.
If everything came off alright, I reckon I could do it in all in 3 hours? It can be a DIY job except for pushing on the retaining collar - 10 ton press is required for that.
Parts - might as well change diff oil while your at it, bearing and collar and the oil seal for the output shaft aren't too dear. I think you are supposed to change the output shaft retaining screws and the nuts to hold onto the halfshaft - I did anyway. Tube of loctite.
I think that is it.

Yep it's a lovely car, great for wafting around in. I looked in at my nearest Jaguar Drivers club meeting last year, but it was if you'll forgive me a little pipe and slippers. It seemed more about sitting around in a room having a raffle and talking about going on picnics than about the cars. Add the fact that I'm in my 20's and you'll see that it wasn't for me - at leasr not yet. This is no reflection on your club however.

I think the 308 was the last of the best of the XJ. The 350 which came out in 2003 doesn't have the sleek, classic lines, although still better looking than the new model.

Well you'll have to stone me as well...

I think the X350 is way too bloated to have any of the sleek elegance of the earlier XJs. It looks to me like a supermodel that has developed a severe case of water retention in her later years. It might have Space and Pace but it ain't got Grace - and it looks just too much like a X Type.

As for the new XJ - that's just gastly. It's a aggressively overstyled lumpen effort IMO. No matter what angle you view it from the delicate curvy coupe roof on such a bulky, slab sided saloon body looks absolutely ridiculous to me, the rear end is all wrong and personally I'd feel very uncomfortable about driving a car with such an intimidating and angry looking front. The interior is not exactly a work of genius either - who wants to spend £50k+ on a car that's laden with all those electronic gadgets and novelties and looks like it's been styled by the people who usually do cheap Japanese soprts cars. Not me for sure.

So yes, stone me too. Just because it's got a lopsided Jaguar leaper stuck on the enormous rear it's not an automatic entry on the list of really beautiful cars IMO. The earlier Series cars and the 300/308 really were IMO and that's why I've had them for the last 20 years.

The current range incorparating Jaguar's new epiletic fit design language? They may be great cars and they'll have to be excatly what the luxury car buyer wants - time will tell - but nah, not for me I'm afraid. I'm keeping my 308 going for as long as I can then I'm off to buy a mk2.

Count me in too.
The X350 is the result of too many "customer clinics"

It's lost the grace that a Jaguar should have. Since the replacement of the Mk9, and particularly from the birth of the original XJ, Jaguar saloons have had a cat like svelteness about them. The X350 is just too tall and bulky to be right. IMHO.

I'm sure the customer clinics went along the lines of

Ford man: So Mr/Mrs Customer what do you love about your XJ.
Customer: The looks, they're so beautiful, don't you dare change the looks.
Ford man: So is there anything you'd like to change?
Customer: Well, a bit more head room would be nice (look stop buying sun roofs damn it)
Ford man: OK, so we could add a bit more headroom for you, so is there any else?
Customer: Well, perhaps a little more legroom in the back would be nice too.
Ford man: Yes, I guess I can see where you are coming from here, how about anything else?
Customer: Well, my knees ain't what they used to be, and getting down into those low seats is starting to get difficult. A number of my Jaguar owning friends have had to give and buy one of those old peoples BMWs cause their knees just can't cope with the low seats anymore.
Ford man: Right, they are kinda low down aren't they. Have you any thing else you'd like to say?
Customer: Don't you dare mess with the looks do you here me!

Well, be careful what you are for, you never know, you might be given it.

You're right - I was looking at all the luxury/performance options a while ago. Since then I've decided I'm just not prepared to spend the money on a newer car in the first place as well as loosing thousands a year in depreciation or keep lining the Chancellor's pocket with £90 a time fill ups either.

Instead I've built a workshop extension on the back of my garage, promoted the XJ8 from daily driver to occasional use Garage Queen and am currently doing most of my miles in a knackered old Renault diesel van - that's taken an easy £100+ a month off my fuel bills and I don't give a st where I park it either. smile
