I need a reminder on what the cause is for this apparently common problem.

When I am driving over a bumpy surface I hear a tweeting sound (like a bird), just a quick chirp / squeak until the next bump or pothole. It doesn't do this with my application of the brakes.

memory tells me its something to do with the brake pads....

Anyone qualify this one for me please ?

If this is on your X308, I would say it's the spring clip on the front brake caliper that holds the pads. These can get distorted when changing the pads and if they are not the correct shape after the job, or located correctly, you will get a faint squeeking type noise when you drive over bumpy surfaces. You will only notice the noise with windows open though.

Hope this helps.

Ah, excellent smile

I knew it drove me up the wall when I was trying to work it out.

Glad it wasn't anything more serious/expensive/annoying smile

Do we consider a cracked cam cover a bit more serious ?

Heh heh.
