Flat battery

My XE (2 litre petrol) won't start or even turn over and shows a low battery message. What's going to be the most likely issue?

Battery itself kaput? It's about 5 years old.
Alternator not charging it? No warning lights beforehand.
Something draining the battery when parked and switched off? Nothing has changed electrically.

Battery was kaput, though only about 4 years old. Halfords mobile mechanic came and tested then replaced it so all is well.

Glad you got it sorted. Modern batteries power a lot of systems in cars now. I found it you push them past 5 years old they tend to start causing issues, some of which you wouldn't necessarily associate with a duff battery.
