XE - gauge cluster update?

Hi everyone,
I have an early XE with the "old style" cluster between the analog gauges.
Jag switched to a new, more readable & appealing design mid-2016 and I'm trying understand whether I could simply buy a new style cluster and plug it in. Would it require programming? Would the car's mileage be picked up by the new cluster?
Apparently there were a few changes to the way the electronics worked during that mid-2016 update, but I don't know whether they make such a retrofit impossible. As far as I can tell, the connectors for both clusters are exactly the same.
I tried Jaguar & LR forums as well as Reddit, but no one seems to know for sure.
