X350 SuperV8 what to look for
Discussion
I’ve not been looking for an XJ, but seen one locally, from a dealer I’ve bought from before, who sells classic & interesting cars.
He has a 2003 SuperV8 for sale. I’ve checked & coolant hoses were replaced last year that involved removal of the supercharger. It has a very reassuring MOT history, gaining between 4k & 6k miles every year, having reached just below 100k miles now. Serviced as required at main dealer & specialists.
What should I look for when checking through the paperwork - are there any parts other than the hoses that should have been replaced by now? Or anything to double check whilst driving?
Any advice welcome. Thanks

X350 stuff;
- Gearbox that lurches,
- Evidence of any work to the air suspension (new compressor, replacement struts), trailing arms. Rear tyres heavily worn on the inside might be indicative of worn bushes. trade tell me that pump rebuild kits are a waste of time given the pumps are all quite old now, and the pumps don't cost that much (all aftermarket, even Jaguar ones)
- Rotted tank straps, rotted subframes; Aluminium body, so anything steel more repaidly corrodes. New Jaguar straps, like a lot of Jaguar parts, are no longer available.
- Fickery headlights, the xenons are lifed to a few thousand hours, so all of them by now are getting to the end. Also electrical issues caused by earths,
- Check all the windows work, especially the rears. Jaguar routed the wiring such that it breaks.
- Check all the locks work, including checking the deadlocks. The FoMoCo locks are all guaranteed to break, and break in the locked position. Replacing them can sometimes entail drillling the door frame. Some of the early failures were just the cable connecting the handle to the lock just coming off, but now the locks themselves are failing.
- Check the mirrors fold in; they are made of cheap cast aluminium alloy that corrodes. Getting hard to find now. New replacements, if found, are £500 each
- Bubbling. scarred paint at the bottom of the doors, bottom of the front wings, front wing lip
- Headlining (of course); they all sag. Mine is just about hanging in there
- Check sunroof works; Rainman Ray had a video on a repair, and new parts are no lonfer available
- Rear boot lid struts might be weak, creaky
- Check the heater heats, check the aircon cools. Its the only car I've had where the engine warms up nicely but the heating remains frigid.
- Check coolant level; the expansion tank can crack and leak. Radiator bottoms are starting to let go now
- CD player; the boot unit is generally terrible. It was pretty out of date in 2004. Newer CDs might not play, and the CD cassette itselfcan wear, leading to stoppages
- Sat Nav; DVD based, no updates after 2012. Its comparatively primative in 2025. Mine will occasionally think Milton Keynes is somewhere near Oxford.
- Parking sensor; can fail, £30 each plus the paint
- Check the spare wheel/ battery well; any water in here could point to a rear tail light leak
