For the past three years or so, my daily has been a 2020 XE P250SE R-Dynamic. I have been generally quite happy with it; it is a likeable thing and quite enjoyable to drive, and has been well-suited to the use to which it is put.

One of my gripes with the car is that the engine can at times be a gruff old lump, particularly at low road speeds as revs rise even modestly. It isn't helped by first gear (and to a degree, second) being so low. I am not as struck on the ZF8 as many other people seem to be (though the Jag box is better than the horrible thing in the Volvo S60 that preceded it for all of 5 months).

I have been considering the XF as a possible replacement, and wondered if anyone on here has experience of both the XE and XF with the Ingenium petrol engine and can comment on whether the XF is any better when it comes to refinement and noise suppression.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I haven't, but in the absence of any other reply I'll step in and suggest that a test drive might be the the best way to find out.

Used to sell them...some people (me included) could pick up on the XF having a quieter cabin but it is marginal, others could hear/feel no difference.

Best to find an XF local to you and drive it back2back with your XE to see if you can pick up on any differences.

Re ZF box, arguably the best autobox available, sadly let down in some cars by the mapping that that brand has signed off on - unfortunately Jag being one.
As you say it is better than the Aisin box in the Volvo however.

Happy shopping.

Thanks for the input. I am quite sensitive to noises in cars, and with the XE I have spent many a happy hour eliminating interior creaks and reducing wind noise and other intrusive sounds, though it seems any difference in cabin noise between XE and XF may be minor. If an appealing car comes up for sale relatively locally I may give one a try, though other priorities have reared their heads so no hurry at the moment.

I know my car well enough by now to be able to drive around the deficiencies with the gearbox, but it can still catch me out sometimes. At least it has never presented me with a boxful of neutrals like the Volvo did at times.

Another possibility is to go older with a V6 or V8 XF.

Hijacking your thread to ask what sort of mpg you get from it. I've had a XF 2.2 diesel for 3 years and get 40-50 out of it on my regular mainly duel carriageway commute with some city driving. Im seriously considering a P250 or P300 XF to replace it with.
Thank you.

I can only go by the trip computer, as I have never measured it myself, though I think it is probably reasonably realistic. Since I have had it, 38mpg has been pretty consistent. The majority of journeys have been the same 35 mile route: a few miles of lanes, M11, A14, A10. It gets driven quite "briskly" but not thrashed. A swift, mostly motorway, run to Scotland last year gave 45mpg.

Thank you. As I suspected with the efficiency of a modern petrol engine, there isn't a great deal in it. Coupled with the cheaper fuel and the much better refinement of a petrol engine you have answered my question. Thanks again

Wife has an 2023 XF P300. MPG is mid 30s but can depend on the journey. It’s allegedly 4WD but the handling is terrible. The interior in the newer model is much nicer especially the digital displays.
She has had both 2.0D and 3.0D and they handled much better oddly enough, these were earlier X260 models. As expected the 2.0D had the infamous engine issue and that will be our last diesel.
