Polo 1.2 TDI showing P0405 EGR Sensor issue

My daughter's 2011 Polo 1.2 TDi is showing the CEL with P0405 EGR Sensor issue. It looks like a nightmare to remove & clean the EGR so is there anything else we can try to fix it? E.g. EGR cleaner sprayed in the air box, fuel additives?
If not, what kind of price is a replacement incl labour. There is an indie VW specialist near us with a good reputation.
