2007 Audi A3 TDI

Has recently decided it doesn't want to start, or should I say it occasionally starts.
It's a a frends car so excuse the rather vague diagnosis, but she's far from a petrol head.
The AA have been called twice and both times it's started straight away - so they've been at odds to know where to start.
Before she takes it to a garage I thought i'd pop up a post on here to see if there's a common issue that could be looked at.
I know, I know... it's a very open ended question, but thought i's ask nonetheless.
The car cranks, just doesn't fire up.
I've suggested a full service, so if anyone knows of anyone decent who ideally specialises in Audis, that would also be appreciated. We're based in South East Essex.

There’s not much to stop a diesel running, if it’s not getting fuel it might be something simple like a crank position sensor failing, but as always with any VW/Audi first thing is get the ECU-read to see if there are any faults logged. That needs to be your absolute starting point other than checking she hasn’t put petrol in it
