What would you rather - a £45 TT RS or a £45k R8
Discussion
£45k wish seems to buy you a TT RS Roadster...0-60 in 3.9 seconds, plenty fast enough, and a nice new shiny up-to-date Audi interior.
Roughly the same money - perhaps a little more - gets you in a 2013/14 R8 V8 Convertible (though more likely coupe) - with similar acceleration and a much older interior...though undoubtedly a little more special (and probably a firmer residual).
What would you go for?

I had the exact same predicament 3 years ago.Roughly the same money - perhaps a little more - gets you in a 2013/14 R8 V8 Convertible (though more likely coupe) - with similar acceleration and a much older interior...though undoubtedly a little more special (and probably a firmer residual).

At first I thought R8 all the way so off I went looking.
I couldn't find a car I was happy with, one was downright awful, another was ok, but reading through the history it'd had a new engine.
I almost bought a lovely example from Hexagon, but their warranty only had a £1,000 claim limit.
So I bought an ex demo TTRS
My thinking was the depreciation of the TT may be be similar in running cost for an R8 that's a few years old?
I intended to keep the TT for 3 years or so, reckoning on losing £15,000 in that time in depreciation.
Sadly, my car had problems, and I fell out with the dealers failures in sorting them, so I sold it after just 12 months of ownership, losing £12,000
I'll never touch another VW Audi product again. They really aren't as well made/reliable as one would expect. And our local dealer? Just pants....
I did enjoy the TT. lovely driving position, good tech, and the noise is the best thing about the car.
But many people who knew my car history were surprised with me buying one. One friend even asked if it was Jills car lol.
I still find my self thinking about R8's from time to time.
TTRS is a fast small car, huge fun and very capable... but more comparable to an RS3.
The R8 is a different prospect. Amazing build quality from the Neckarsulm factory, engine in the back, supercar performance.
If the interior bothers you, get the head unit upgraded by RTA to their Carplay unit.

If you are looking at the older gen 1 V8 R8 then a mk3 TTS would out perform it never mind a TTRS.
But just look at the R8, it’s a stunning looking car and if you can afford to run one then for me there is no contest.
Sadly I can’t fit one in my garage but the TT fits nicely so that’s where my money went.

I've owned a few TT over the years and I'm a huge fan. Great looking cars, and fast in TTS and RS guise. But the R8 is about so much more than the 0-60mph times. It's the only true drivers car Audi make. It's a mid-engined, V8 powered junior supercar. You can feel exactly where it's placed on the road, and it's composure is brilliant. A truly great drivers car. And the V8 is plenty quick enough for fast b road driving, so don't be distracted by everyone saying you have to get the V10.
Perfectly possible to daily one. I put 30,000 miles on one over 2.5 years. And lost very little value. It's certainly not cheap to run, but they are generally reliable and running costs are certainly shy of supercar levels.

I wouldn’t class 4.6 to 60 as supercar performance. The R8 is a different prospect. Amazing build quality from the Neckarsulm factory, engine in the back, supercar performance.

The truth is that if you throw a remap at the ttrs the r8 wouldn’t have seen which way it went.
I would get the R8. :-)
Recently went out in a R8 & a then a DB9, they look great & go quite well, I have a TTRS Stage 1 so not a major difference performance & I enjoyed both of them , slightly leaning towards the DB9 . I am off the idea as I don't like M'way, I find A roads a bit of the same ,when I do go out I usually end up on B roads or worse lol. For me, either one of these cars or a CL63 would be no good at all as they are so wide & you'd never relax as you scraped by the cars or get really good at reversing back to the last passing place etc.

Seems an odd reason not to buy a car. They are - literally - designed to be used outside, so I don't think they'll melt if they're not kept in a garage. But just look at the R8, it’s a stunning looking car and if you can afford to run one then for me there is no contest.

(And I'd probably choose an R8 over a TT)
