VW UP! GTI - day to day experience as the main car?

Has anyone owned one for a period of time and ran it as their main/only car?

Dies it niggle or a good alrounder/commuter?

I owned a white 5 door as my daily driver. It was a great little car, fast enough to have fun, surprisingly spacious inside (managed to get a photo booth to a job) I would happily have another one.

It's my only car but I have only had it a few months so not too many miles.

I could list things that are a compromise - but it is a 3.6m long city car with an engine/noise/handling combination designed for pure fun. You have to expect a few compromises.

Happy bumbling along in city traffic, eating up the motorway miles or scooting along a country road. Doesn't cost much to own. Enough space for me and two kids and everything we've needed to carry so far.

No regrets on my part.

I think it depends where you’re coming from. I’ve had mine two and a half years but it really does just function as a runabout car. It’s quite a noisy little thing and the ride can be harsh on badly surfaced roads, particularly if you don’t get the tyre pressures right. Our other car is a year old BMW X3, and that is like driving a library in comparison.

I drove a AYGO the Dummer before last from Manchester to the centre of Paris, Fontainebleu, Reimes, Ardennes forest, Belgium, Brugges then back..

No issues and it cruised at 80+.

The car that I replaced it with is a 2014 VW Passat estate diesel that I'm not happy with. Slothlike, sluggish. Dull. There's nothing wrong with it. Just..dull. no fun

A number of people on the owners forum have replaced the standard fit wheels with 16” alloys and 45 section tyres. It’s not something I’d do, because part of the appeal is the looks, but it would be an option if you wanted more comfort. You’ll absolutely love it coming from a diesel Passat.

I actually posted about this in James's RR thread, but I did this, it makes a world of difference. I do prefer the looks of the standard wheels, but as I spend the majority of my time driving it rather than looking at it.....

One of the first things I did was put 205/40 GY Eagle F1s on mine. Combined with the right tyre pressures they resulted in a more compliant ride. I still think the damping feels unsophisticated though, and if I do end up using the car more I’d look into aftermarket springs/dampers.

Love my UP GTI.
It’s fun to drive ,fast enough , cheap to run and buy , cruises happily at 90 on long motorway runs, a joy for town driving.
Had mine just over 2 years now.

It is - I've been considering the same. I've got another service coming up and I'm tempted to fit the KW V1's....
