EA888 oil consumption issues.
Discussion
Does anyone know whether the gen.3 Ea888 1.8tsi (DAJA?) engines have/had issues with excessive oil usage? I have read that it has been a known fault with the gen.1 and 2 engines but can't find any info on mine.
I purchased a 6C Polo, and may or may not have observed the oil drop from the full marker on the dipstick to the centre in just over 350 miles. Too soon to tell whether my suspicions are well founded because I may have took a misreading due to variables or simple user error since the engine was warm when I picked the vehicle up and first checked it, but time will tell.
Anyone?

Yes they do, up to a litre per 1000 miles is normal, if it drops to a litre in under 600 they may offer a rebuild based on service history.
Even a litre in 1000 miles sounds like a hell of a lot considering that the oil should be sealed away in the engine case from points of combustion dunc69 said:
What year was the Gen 3?
My 2010 1.8 Octavia Scout guzzled oil for fun......
2014 was the gen.3 revision. I read that they were supposed to have sorted the oil burning issues. I have found contradicting info but most of the reports I have found relating to the ea888 family are the first and second generation. My 2010 1.8 Octavia Scout guzzled oil for fun......
I don't think Gen 3s have an issue with it. If I recall correctly most of the issues with oil use related to bad piston rings and they changed them around late 2011 I think.
I had a gen 2 EA888 in an Octavia VRS (early 2010) which drank oil for fun and needed almost weekly top ups. Sold it at 80k as it was doing my head in. Ironically the oil light pinged just before I got to the dealer 4 hours away to trade in.
Now running a late 2013 Octavia VRS with a Gen 3 EA888 and I haven't topped it up once in 60k. Colleague has a late 2014 Leon with the 1.8 EA888 and I think he mentioned topping up once but no real crazy consumption.
I reckon you will be fine OP and wouldn't worry yourself over it.

I have a 2014 Seat Leon with the 1.8 Gen 3 EA888. No issues with oil consumption. I never have to top it up between services (every 10,000 miles). Good engine in my opinion. 40 mpg average, revs well, feels smooth. Slightly lacking in torque for it's size but perfectly usable day to day.
I think maybe wait until you have a 1000 miles under your belt, check it weekly and then see how much you have used. You may find it hard for a dealer to cough up for a new engine or engine work. From what I've read it largely depends on how the car was run in, someone who did occaisional short low speed journeys with minimal revs from new versus a range of speeds and journeys probably helps bed in the piston rings and seals etc
We have a 2010 EA888 in a 2.0 TSI Tiguan and got it at 36k miles. It hadn't done much mileage 12 months prior to buying it and i had to out maybe 500ml of oil in for the first 1000 miles, after that it hasn't needed a drop, now on 49k miles 14 months later.

The running in process is definately an important factor for the engines future oil consumption. Had a 2015 scirocco R (manual) and i reved that through the whole range and it barely consumed any oil for the 24k I owned it.
2nd Identical 2017 Scirocco R (auto) I drove less eagerly and also having an auto box changed up at lower revs when compared to my style of manual changing. This car had a worrying issue of oil thirst from the start, so started to give it more beans more regularly which seemed to help . Its now done just over 30K but still burns plenty of oil but less than before.
Ive just ordered an Audi TT (auto) so will learn from my experience and see how that one goes. Fingers crossed I wont feel the need to keep a bottle of top up in the boot as standard.
