What with the service history of cars being stored electroncially these days, what happens if you get the car serviced by someone other than a main dealer?

How does the service history get updated?

I was at The Phirm in Camberley only this morning for a service.

With the copy of the invoice they also gave me a page of information that was presumably uploaded to the Audi system (date, reason for car's visit etc) so I guess it affords a detailed view of a car's service history no matter which specialist you use, providing they have subscribed to the system I guess.

VAG's system (Erwin) is straightforward to enlist with as a commercial entity - it's a little clunky but does allow free access to a vehicle's history, detailed service schedule and upcoming maintenance. It also allows a garage to enter new services within a 10-day window. This is all free, albeit with paid access for detailed drawings / procedures etc. All a business needs to do is register and then provide a VIN number for the vehicle concerned.

I found this out because I am registered as a "commercial" Erwin account. I did this because I explored Erwin a little and found that the ordinary consumer account doesn't allow access to these things... but that it's simple to register yourself as a business and therefore gain free access to these things!

The Cardinal is correct.

Used properly the system works well. It isn't at all intuitive but you get used to it.

There are a few useful vids on youtube about various tasks with erwin, actually.
