Hi everyone

I might be in a position shortly to have about £25k to spend on an S3.

I know they are not to everyone’s taste, with some thinking the driving experience is poor compared with the competition, but as an overall package I’m really attracted to one

Anyone have much experience? I might just be able to get a facelift in budget, but might take a little time. Not many available private, most are dealer cars.

Must have options? I think it’s just down to colour, 5 doors and condition, with any options a bonus!

Any real ownership experiences very welcome!

Thanks very much.

I ran a 2018 S3 Sportback (so very similar same mechanicals) for 30k miles until swapping for an RS3 last October. Nothing went wrong other than having a drivers window seal replaced under warranty, it was weak and the window dragged it in as it went up. I look after my cars but they get used, it was driven hard and launched often, PS4 Michelins transformed the traction and ride quality. The S3 is a terrific allrounder, nothing to shy away from and compered with my current 'beast' the running costs are very favourable. Residuals are very strong at the moment and are likely to be that way for a while, facelift with virtual dash is the way to go.

Without being a conscious fanboy, I've previously had various 2.0T, quattro and S3 models - and I've found audi-sport.net a good resource for all.

I went cold on performance cars after going out on a high with a supercharged Golf R32 and re-entered the club this year with a 2018 S3 S-Tronic, which I run a Reader's Cars thread on.

I accidentally bought what's regarded as the one to have, because mine's a 2017-18 sweet spot model with:

- 2016+ facelift, including goodies as standard like the Audi Sound System, LED headlights etc
- 7-speed S-Tronic
- 310PS engine, pre- the particulate filter that came in later 2018 and restricts the sound a lot
- optional Technology Pack, which I wasn't bothered about but has the nice digital dash and commands another £1-1.5k normally

Prices have stiffened for these cars since I bought mine in April and it seems they're attracting people, like me, who prefer the styling and interior to the 2020- 8Y model. They are also well regarded by press and owners alike, including against the Golf R.

I'm finding mine's very good at the compact, undercover, somewhat smoother brief I have for my cars. I rarely use the full performance, but its strength is that it comprehensively covers a wide-ranging set of needs while this performance remains just a whim away...

Thanks very much.

It looks like a facelift is in reach, and I’ve decided on Ara or Sepang blue. Must be a 5 door.

My car history was been varied, from a Ford Cosworth, to various Subarus, Golf R32, ED30 and currently a MK7 GTI.

Very confused by the various wheels they seem to have. Any idea on where I could find a facelift sales PDF brochure?

Many thanks.

Google it - the contemporary brochures are 100% there for facelift models. I'd add a link but it's quicker to write this!

Thanks, I struggled to find a decent UK version.

Just realised that the Sepang blue is not available on the facelift 🤨

I have a 2014 S3 Sportback and for me it's better looking than the newer models. It has B and O sound system, diamond stitching leather seats, rear camera, front and rear parking aids and the auto-brake sensor system. It's 5 door so easy to get 2 child seats in and out and has a decent boot. The car feels really well built and it's a great car.

If I was belting it around a track I'd prefer my Impreza as I reckon the Subaru handles better at speed.

Panoramic roof would be a must for me, and silver paint, non black edition

Standard kit was decent enough.

If it’s the engine you’re after both the cupra Leon and golf R are better equipt as standard with ACC and digital dash on facelift models

Audi did stop producing traditional brochures in 2018, but I do have S3 brochures up to just before this if you'd like one.

Send me a message through profile and I'll bounce it back to you.

Just an update, Dr G kindly sent the brochures and I enquired about a couple of cars today! Might see the following one on Friday:

5 Door Sportback, 2017 (67), Ara blue
14,500 miles
Listed as optional:

Tech Pack (bigger centre screen?)
Park System Plus
Comfort and Sound Pack
Door Mirrors (?)
High Beam Assist
Privacy Glass

Any thoughts on the options appreciated - would have liked pan roof and upgraded seats, but still a good spec I think....

Any decent owners clubs and Facebook groups?

Thanks again

I had a 2015 S3 saloon for a couple of years. Great car. If you love music, get the B&O sound system. One thing to check if is the thermostat housing has been changed. the EA888 engines are notorious for the thermostat housing leaking. A dealer will charge a small fortune for this because of the labour so if it's been recently done, thats a bonus.
