S4 vs 2.0 tfsi
Discussion
Hello,
Looking at A4s and S4s around about 2012 onwards it seems that the S4 is a lot more car for relatively little extra money. The cynic in me thought that this must reflect the fact that the S4 is a minefield of expensive parts and complicated repairs which will ruin me, but reading up on them they don't seem that bad. Or put another way the 2.0tfsi doesn't seem that good.
Am I missing something here? Are the clean, low mileage S4s now dipping under £15k actually dogs or are the 2.0 tfsi with similar mileage still fetching £12k plus actually a far more practical proposition?

I guess it is the extra money for fixing it and running it, the 2.0tfsi is still plenty fast enough for the road.Looking at A4s and S4s around about 2012 onwards it seems that the S4 is a lot more car for relatively little extra money. I suppose its more enthusiasts that will gravitate to the S4 over a top range S-Line 2.0L as well, so maybe they aren't selling as well.
They are a lovely looking car and I've ruled out the 2.0 on the basis that I'd wish it was an S4 every time I saw it.
My hesitancy is being landed with huge bills for things like the gearbox which will go as these cars get older, though looking at the thread posted it seems total failure is quite rare.

Get the S4
I went from the 2.0 all be only FWD to an S4 and it was like night and day, bloody marvelous.
Ran it for 8 years with only servicing and a few little odds and sods, only thing that was painful was the high VED as it was a manual avant but this was offset by not having to worry about the box packing up. Plus I wanted manual anyway.
Still miss it every day.

Manual would be my preference too, but I didn't know about the VED situation. Probably irrationally I resent paying over £500 for road tax way more than £340 even though the extra isn't much in the scheme of things.
Did they drop the manual entirely after the face-lift or are there just very few around?

I'm looking after it Paul. Should tick over 100k miles in the next few days.I went from the 2.0 all be only FWD to an S4 and it was like night and day, bloody marvelous.

Nothing has gone wrong and since the last service 6k miles ago it hasnt needed the oil topping up.
Great cars!

Just pay the VED monthly on a DD and you won't even notice the extra £15 per month or whatever it is!Did they drop the manual entirely after the face-lift or are there just very few around?

Interesting observation on the boot size, I'm about to move from a 15 plate passat estate to a B8 avant - and will lose a third of the boot space.
Planning on sticking a roof box on it for road trips and family holidays.
I was a little worried about this as well as I was coming from an XF Sportbrake which has a pretty large boot. I was initially looking for an S6 but then an S4 came up at a good price and ticked lots of boxes (although the alleged main dealer FSH is borderline fraudulent as far as I'm concerned and Audi UK couldn't care less).Planning on sticking a roof box on it for road trips and family holidays.
The S4 boot is a little shallower but you can still pack a lot in, plus a simple solution to cater for the wife's enthusiastic packing lol....
