Hi

Have reverently acquired a lovely S5 for commuting duties.

Despite “dull” reviews vs BMWs etc I am rather liking it.

FASH, 41k.

Drives spot on….I think. When I change down from 5th to 4th there is a slight “cht” noise, nothing aggressive and the changes are silky smooth across the range….just odd it’s just these gears. Seems to happen in manual and auto.

DSG oil change is due.

Any insight appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

I think you have probably answered your own question.

The DSG oil service is pretty important & not to be skipped.

Mine is a 2.0 TFSI but similar enough for comparison.
Mine felt smoother & quieter after the oil change.

Not that expensive at an indy either

If it hasn't been changed before, DSG oil change is overdue at 41k.

Offload sharp.

Thats if the same box as I had in my 3.0 Allroad A6.
I heard the very same, and despite the warranty they would not have a look at a claim because of the Oil change (exactly same scenario as you - all electric OBD and sensors, does not sayget box oil changed)

Diagnosis from a Gearbox indy was a weak synchro on 4th gear. Reckoned nigh on impossible to source the parts.
Audi would 'just change whole unit' - the bill for the 'new box' - £10,900.

plus fitting.

Livid.

Hey OP, glad your enjoying it. In my experience, if your gut feeling is something isn’t right, it usually isn’t. A gearbox oil change can really help smooth things out, but if there’s something wrong it may need looking at. Unfortunately the mechatronic unit in these gearboxes is well documented as being weak and temperamental, so it could be that. Or, it could be something else - I’m no mechanical expert. However there are a few places that can refurbish these boxes at a fraction of the cost quoted by Audi to replace. For example, the below guys are very well respected, and knowledgeable. When I enquired about an issue with our old Q5 gearbox a complete rebuild was 2.5k - so they maybe worth a call.

Did you buy it from a dealer at 41k?

If so it was overdue when you bought it and they should have done it pre-sale.

Nope, indi.

Having the DSG oil changed in a few days and will see if it changes anything.

Have found some reputable refurb options of its borked at not crazy prices.

Thanks for responses.

DSG repairs now are akin to manual clutch replacements, theres alot of specialists around now so they price of refurbs and repairs isn't what it used to be.

But if the synchro mesh ?
I may even have the audio file of mine making its small ‘ahem’ type noise
Started
When down shifting, but then became on the way up and down the box

You can get your full unit refurbed or just buy a full refurb unit and I guess can sell yours off for cheap for them to refurb and sell on.

I've never had this issue but I had strange issues with my last DQ250 6 speed wet box.

The upshift paddle occasionally downshifted instead past the safety rev limit so it made the gearbox scream and engine brake, it was horrendous! And no specialist I spoke to had ever heard of the problem, I got a full diag static and road test, nothing came up out of the ordinary. The only solution was just never use the upshift paddle.

I think the clutch started slipping sometimes as well, it only had about 35k on it as well.

S Tronic oil at +/- a few miles won't make a difference unless a warranty company is looking for an excuse.

Worst case Milta in Bristol rebuild that box for 2500+vat.
