Mk7 Golf TDI remap - insurance
Discussion
I’ve had a mk7 Golf 1.6 TDI for about two years. Been ok with it but it can be sluggish so started to look at remaps for a bit more poke.
Stage 1 remap is £320 with a local VAG specialist and increase 105hp to 153hp. Lovely I think - will be the same as the 2.0TDI and I get to keep my car which is in great condition, low mileage, and I know it’s history.
Contact my insurance. They flat out refuse to insure the car because of the percentage in power increase.
They cover up to 25% but nothing after that.
Is it just me or is that absolutely crazy?
I could literally go and buy a 150hp 2.0 tdi and the insurance is actually LESS than my 105hp 1.6 tdi.
Now i understand that the stage 1 remap will increase the power percentage by approx 45% but in actual BHP terms it’s really not that much. By their logic I could get 25% increase on a 200hp car which is an increase of 50hp. Exactly the same as what I want to do.
Thing is with car prices at the moment i can’t find a as new 2.0 TDI or better without splashing at £2k or more.
Getting a remap of 25% power on 105bhp doesn’t seem worth it.
Can anybody recommend other insurers or am I being unrealistic to expect them to insure such a mad increase of 50hp.

Just try an online price comparison site, most allow you to put your mods in and see what comes back.
Obviously you would need to check the small print if it says engine remap, ie the percentage if quoted.
I'm not sure how figures can be guaranteed unless confirmed on a rolling road so its a bit of a grey area.

I've just tried GoCompare and Compare The Market. Both give the option to state the car is chipped, but don't give the option to say exactly how much the increase in power is. Obviously you would need to check the small print if it says engine remap, ie the percentage if quoted.

Admiral (my current insurer who refuse to insure me if i remap to 153bhp) are the cheapest result on GoCompare, but obviously I know they won't insure me.
I guess it's going to be a case of phoning individual companies

I was in the same positon with Admiral, had my mk5 gti remapped and they wouldn't cover it due to the percentage increase. Admiral (my current insurer who refuse to insure me if i remap to 153bhp) are the cheapest result on GoCompare, but obviously I know they won't insure me.

I rang around all the specialist modified car insurers such as Brentacre, Adrian Flux, Keith Micheals, Greenlight, Sky insurance.
Greenlight turned out the cheapest on a 7500 limited miles policy (extra £48 to make it 10k anytime during the policy). Total for me ended up being £425 for the year with protected no claims and all mods declared and covered (remap, Air intake, sports cat, bigger brakes). Plus if you make any further mods you can add free of charge. For reference i have 5 years no claims and i'm 35.
