looking to lease for my old man, we have narrowed it down to factory order:
A3 Sportback TSFI 35 S-Line with Comfort and Sound. Daytona Grey.
He has always driven a manual although I am suggesting this might be tricky with electronic handbrake and he has to reverse backwards up a fairly steep drive out of his garage. To me the auto would be better. His dislike of autos is from back in the day when you got a 3 speed slushmatic!! The DSG in my missus's new Kodiaq is brilliant and being that it is with the 1.5 150bhp petrol I think that is pretty much the same combination as you would get in the A3?
Anyone got one, any views would be very helpful. He is nearly 80, my other concern is whether he would get on with all the tech but he wants a new car and everything seems to come with screens/virtual as standard these days.

By the age of 80, a lot of those reflex actions will have set in and your Dad might or might not adapt readily to auto, as you say. The DSG is superb, but my Granddad had an auto for the first time at age 88 and ended his driving career some years later after mistaking the brake for clutch and going through a wall.
I'd personally recommend late 2014-2021 era A3, whether you go with manual 'box or DSG. By common consensus, this previous 8V generation model has the better interior with a simple and high quality feel. The new 8Y model is essentially the same car underneath, but with noticeably downgraded interior materials probably paying for the tech. It does retain some knobs though, unlike its Golf Mk8 brethren.
In terms of specs, the Sport model is a good package in 8V or 8Y flavour if buying with your own money. I know you asked about lease and, here, S-Line spec may work out "cheaper". Models below 140/150hp get cost-saving torsion beam rear suspension.

Thanks, good advice!
Think we are going for a 70 plate (last year's model not the latest) TFSI 35 (150bhp) S-Line Sportback manual in Daytona Grey. Think this is the best combination we can find, i.e. not the new fangled tech of the new model and also has a manual gearbox.
Strong money though, circa 28K for an ex Audi 3,000 mile car. I have a choice of two from 2 different Audi dealers.
When they say ex-Audi, what will it have been used for?
