2020 RS6 needs oil topping up every 1,000 miles. Audi say this is "within tolerance". I have never heard of a modern car using oil like this. What say Pistonheads?

I think my concern would be dictated by how long you intend to keep the car and how many miles you do per year.

Have you checked with other owners? (Forums etc)

All my TVRs used a litre every 1,000, but then it was a 1950s Buick motor. hehe

I have poured gallons of Mobil One into my Chimaera, but just rather surprised with this. I am quite quick to Sainsbury's, but not exactly racing it!

Sometimes which of a couple of different oils dealers use will influence how much oil is consumed - out of Castrol and Shell I found my S5 used less oil on the Shell. If you're in the habit of using the performance before the oil is fully warmed up, then that will increase oil consumption markedly as well.

If it's a keeper then it needs investigating, if only to rule out things like PCV or turbos being faulty.

Audi have always taken the proverbial over acceptable oil consumption - even then the 2.0T caused them to do a load of free engine rebuilds/replacements due to poor piston rings/design. My 2011 S5 has historically needed two oil top ups between annual services and only now that I've replaced the PCV with a modified unit, which also requires the ECU to have EGR turned down, does the engine not require top ups between services.

Hopefully other RS6 owners will chip in on whether your consumption is typical or not.

My 2004 S4 used a litre per 1k miles, so it’s been a known ‘within tolerance’ issue for a while.

My C5 RS6 never used a drop though.

Given how new the OPs car is I wonder if the engine is still bedding in, if it's not done that many miles? Would be quite 'old school' but could explain it.....

Thanks all. Will speak to Audi again, but in the meantime will put a can of Mobil One in the boot for emergencies!

Don’t get into the habit of my cars previous owner - he purchased the oil 1 litre at a time from the local Audi garage!

His (very full) folder of receipts had loads of £25 for ‘1ltr Audi oil’ in there..

I'll have a look today for any updated guidance but "acceptable" and "within tolerance" with Audi was always 0.5l in 1,000km. I.e. a litre in 1200 miles.

How much is your RS6 actually burning? Have you measured or approximated it?

It's not scientific but minimum to maximum on the digital dipstick is about a litre.

Did 36,000 miles in my C7 (the same engine give or take) and never had to top up between 9000 mile services. But varies with engines and how you run them in. Does seem a lot though. Does it smoke under load or deceleration?

No smoking. It's probably doing a litre per 1,000 miles. It does strike me as odd, as I never had to put oil in the last 2 RS6s.

If it isn’t (obviously) spunking oil over anything, or out of the exhaust, that sounds pretty standard. It’s a big engine, that’s not too much of a worry.
