S3 8L - getting in and out of reverse

Morning all.

I've got a 2001 S3 8L, and it's always had an issue with the gearstick not popping back up when you move from reverse to first. If you manually pull the gear lever up it's fine, but if you forget then you risk going back into reverse without realising!

Anyone know where in the mechanism the spring (I assume that's what the problem is) lives? Or what I should be looking at?
