MK7 Golf - sat nav / revese cam questions
Discussion
A friend is looking for a car and has asked me to help but I don't know much about MK7 Golfs.
The models she is looking at in her price range (MY 2015/2016 1.4 petrol or 1.6 diesel) do not have the built in sat nav and reverse camera but she wants these functions. Having done a quick search online, I see that reverse camera can be retrofitted and phones can be plugged in for Android Auto to have sat nav.
My question is, can the above be achieved on any MK7 Golf or does it only apply to models with certain existing options?

Reverse camera can generally be retrofitted to all models, and android auto/carplay can be enabled on MY16 cars.
If it has the 6.5” screen rather than the 5.8” it will be carplay ready. Some of the earlier cars do need the usb module replacing as well as the activation key.
You will struggle to find a mid-spec mid-sized engine with either fitted to be honest, it wasn’t a particularly popular option at the time

nope - you have to remember Carplay was only released in 2014 and Android Auto 2015, so both were in their infancy, and to be honest were both a bit pants then, so the demand for it was fairly low and many manufacturers hadn't developed their stereos for it yet.
The App Connect (VWs name for the Carplay/AA features) stereos are generally known as "MIB2", and most VW/skoda/seats etc started getting them mid-late 2015 for the 16 model year. You can retrofit MIB2 to MIB1 cars but you need the stereo unit, USB module, matching screen and screen surround/centre vents (and will all need coding with VCDS) so its not cheap.
If it has the App connect option in the main menu it is MIB2 can it can be activated by a dealer (or unofficially by a guy with a laptop) and sometimes the usb module is needed too. its not guarenteed but if it has the old "MDI" connector like off older VWs its MIB1 and if it has a standard USB its generally MIB2, but there was some crossover.

Our 65 plate GTI came with Discover Pro (basically the bigger touch screen factory nav) and was enabled for CarPlay/Android Auto
I had the rear view camera retrofitted (there's a kit available from TPS/mail dealers with all the parts needed) and with labour was about £500 all in. So more than the option would've cost the original owner to spec it, but not stupidly expensive. Also has to be activated via ODIS for the car to recognise it, so needs to be done by a decent indy specialist as most will only have VCDS or similar.
