Hi.

Son’s Golf GTI performance alternator seems to have failed.
Car has some 38k FVWSH he heard a bag the other days. When we opened the bonnet we could see spots of grease over other nearby parts, the car gave a warning of battery not charging. So assume it’s the alternator.

Any one know If this is a common problem, and how much it would be for a new one Vs non genuine.
Wasn’t planning on changing it, as he moves in to his new house today so wanted to run the car for a few more years.
He’s owned it for 5 years and apart from general servicing and wheel corrosion it’s been a good car.

Many thanks

Check the drive system first, belt and particularly the pulley.

Agreed. And no, alternator failure not common.

Thank you for your input. You were correct it was the lower pulley.
All replaced and back with my son.

Good reliable and robust cars that still look sharp. I run a 7R…had it from new and cannot part with it. Don’t like MK8 interior and prefer the older dash. Done quite a few mods even though I’m closing in on 60 and love a good trackday.
